How often should a detent be lubed

The grease doesn't seem to stay on the detent very long and was wondering how often they are supposed to be lubed as they are a high-pressure point.

Load bearing areas should have a layer ie some grease. A dab is fine, a blob is a waste. I pick a tiny amount with a toothpick, dab & wipe the grease on. Personaly as long as it looks coated its fine, if definately dry I dab again.

    Detent lube

Per your post I cleaned & lubed my HW95L which looked just like your picture. Thanks for the reminder.

Here is a new unpolished detent with machine marks I wonder if it would hold the lube better or would it still be better polished for smoothness.

That one I got new from chambers years ago for my spear barrel but the one in the OP pic is 22 years old and polished so I think that I had better polish the new one before using

Me too. Sometimes I might put a drop of moly oil into the detent after a very long period. Obviously, I always moly grease when stripping. Will apply a small amount of lube to each one as they next get used, I think.....

The answer to the question is:

When it feels a bit rough while operating - should be a very smooth click, lubricate if not.

I go with just a dab of molly and try to keep it clean so I dont transfer any oils ont the back of the pellet plus it keeps the atrraction of dirt down too

As other contributors have said, a dab of molly when needed. A machined surface will hold lube a bit better than a shiny surface....
