I hope your friend is resting in peace, and overtime your sense of loss is replaced with enjoying fond memories of him

I didn’t mean to come across as maudlin! I have lost a friend, that is true. He was a nice guy, but we have been expecting it for several weeks now.
The tragedy is the amount of stuff his wife has to go through to sort and sell. The gun room was always my job, but I had no idea he’s squirrelled so much away.
    Nor did his wife!

We have now also found a receipt for a pistol that he has bought but was awaiting the authorisation for his licence. The authorisation has just arrived, but he was cremated on Wednseday, so it’s too late for him to take it with him. Little scamp!

Make lists! Label keys! Write combinations down somewhere!

    Sorry to hear this Nick.

The whole "write down what you've got" applies to everything though... finances, pensions, bank accounts, all of that. When my Dad passed a few years back, most of his finances were noted down in a spreadsheet, which helped a lot during what is always going to be a difficult time for everyone left behind. I made a decision at that point to do the same, and also to try and reduce my airgun collection to a slightly more sensible size.... Yes, work in progress on that last point.

Your pain and humanity come across loud and clear Nick, as does the measure of your mate. RIP dressing gown man on a mission, what a brilliant photo! Great practical advice for us all, make it easier on those we leave behind.

    Sincere condolences.

Me thinks your late shooting buddy Dave was a bit of a character.

I’m guessing you will find even more surprises in time.

Out of interest was it an older 45 in the maroon/purple box? Or the later type?

I've not checked in on General Airgun properly for a bit, so saw this thread after your sale thread, Nick.

I'm sorry to read about your friend, he sounds like a top bloke and that dressing gown photo & story is cracking!

My sincere condolences to you and to Dave's family.

    Rip

A very salutory lesson and one I know well having had to deal with a late Uncles gun room.

Dealing with firearms in a deceased's estate in the UK is a real pain so I am sticking to sub-12ft lbs.

Very upsetting to loose a good friend so tragically, but he, and now his wife, are lucky to have a mate like you to turn to.

The part of the lesson that needs emphasising is that as well as an inventory of kit and how to access it your successors need someone with the right knowledge of where and how to sell the collection. Most of us have kit that has been modified and embellished which significantly raises its value in the right market, but would certainly not be recognised by a local RFD making an offer for it.
