How bad are Spitfires really?

I'll admit I've never really seen a good word about them but I'm a bit of a sucker for pretty tins, if I got some cheap enough would they work for plinking or would I be better melting down the lead for slingshot ammo?

The new ones are fine for plinking and some rifles shoot them really well, the old ones were truly awful.

I have some old knock downs with a 2" target area. When I go ratting in one location I use my best pellets for the rats & 10yd plink cheap pellets at the knock downs inc' spitfires. I wouldn't waste my money on expensive accurate pellets !!

I'm a budget shooter so cheap and cheerful is kind of what I've got to make do with, still have a good amount of pellets so no rush just thought about it after seeing a tin while visiting Pownalls and then people talkng about them, if I find a tin cheap enough then I'll try them.

I use .22 Spitfires for informal target and plinking. They look OK - seem OK. I was at a boot sale and always zoom in on shooty things. There was an old tin (same pretty tin) and yes the old oxidised pellets that were left looked truly awful.

Tried to support my local gunshop and asked for cheap .22. For £9.00 I got "David Nickerson Magnum Point". Never again. Only good for power testing (13.2 gn) and very informal plinking.

Been forever since I last went to a Boot sale, think last one was Hitchin around Christmas time several years back, the Old Man forgot the foot plates to the wheelchair so I had to try and hold my feet up while supporting stuff in my lap, no shooting stuff that I remember but might get lucky going to one out in the sticks I guess as more space to shoot out there.

I bought some, they are OK, but might try some bulldog or marksman in 5.6mm

Yes them David Nickerson I feel are the same or more or less as the old spitfires terrible, plinking in .22 I like hobby’s.

I've never tried the Spitfires. Most likely never will.

The budget pellets I have tried, and they impress, are the H&N Excite Hammer. I've only tried them in .22 so far. Others have reported similarly pleasing results with the .177s and also the flat head variety.

New ones in .177 are surprisingly good. Equal to JSB and FTT in guns I've tried them in
