Correct size spanner to use on a Hornady 'Sure Loc' Lock ring?

    Hello,

I bought several of the Hornady 'Sure Loc' Lock rings a few weeks back, very pleased with them and I'm now looking to obtain the correct spanner to use on them.

According to what I can view, a jaw opening of 1.102" needs a 28mm spanner, can any of the experienced engineering members please confirm I have the correct spanner size for this item please?

I have many spanners but nothing above 20mm.

Hornady are American & America does not use the metric system so the correct size is almost certainly going to be imperial 1.1/8" (1.126")

    Thanks.

One query if the measured jaw opening is 1.102", is not a Imperial 1.1/8 at 1.126" going to be a bit 'sloppy' when using it on the ring?

The difference is 0.024" that's 2 one hundredths of an inch or about 0.5mm which is hardly "sloppy".

28mm is 1.1035" 0.0015" clearance, so half a sheet of paper clearance the expansion difference between a hot/cold day would probably exceed that,
never mind the manufacturing "tolerance" both in the item, tool & measuring device.

Be aware spanners have a bit ‘tolerance built in’ and some makes are better than others. Coincidentally on you tube the other day a video recommended to me () was some American chap where he was testing different makes of spanners. I hadn’t appreciate beforehand the variance in sizes between (allegedly) the same size, but of different makes. He also snapped his King Dick, which was shocking. There’ll also be a bit of tolerance on the lock ring size, to some degree or other.

Thanks for your info, this what I'm afraid of.
I bought the rings and they are great, I've been using a slightly larger spanner to 'nip' the dies up, but there is a bit of slack between the Hornady Loc ring and the spanner jaw size, it's noticeable that there is a very slight 'rounding' starting on the rings.
That's why I want a spanner which is an exact fit, and as you kindly pointed out there is variance!
Also the price of spanners quite shocked me having many sets of different spanners bought many many years ago!
I might try a boot sale which has a few tool stands and take a die with me.

If you have some old feeler gauges or can access shim steel, it is possible to make up the difference in size between the spanner and nut.

Just cut with tin snips to fit the inside of the spanner jaw; secure with EvoStik - it's easy to remove after.

( old engineer / fitter turner trick used for worn, rounded or odd size nuts )

Nowhere to go ........in no hurry to get there; www.rivington-riflemen.uk----- well I suppose it is somewhere to go.... founded by I.J. - let down by the tainted blood scandal

Thanks Mike, a great idea, it might well come to that.

That’s a good idea. I was thinking the heatproof aluminium tape for car exhausts etc, but this (shim steel) would be a bit harder and therefore probably better.

My only thoughts are if a printed spanner is suitable, that suggests they shouldn’t be torqued up too tightly in the first place. In which case wrap the lock nut in some electrical tape to protect it if it is tight, but then on should be fairly simple to tighten?
