    Spring guide sleeve experiment.

Yes a sleeve for the guide.
I've disembowelled a Superstar which I brought to the bash and was such a horrible twanger that I had to put it away.

Here is a query especially but not exclusively for tuners/ engineers.
I am experimenting with using beer can for a sleeve wrapped around the factory guide and wonder if any one has tried it before because I can see some problems developing.

It already has a factory piston sleeve and the spring is as straight as a die. There is enough slop inside the spring for the aluminum to sit very nicely on the guide. At the other end one of Tin bum's top hats has turned down perfectly by hand.
    Lovely. Thanks Nick.
I wondered whether I could get the aluminium to such a tight tube with out forming ridges but it has. The big question is whether the sleeve will ride off the guide once it starts being used.

I am contemplating securing the sleeve with Loctite 271 or finding a way to make a shoulder and clamp it behind a thrust washer.
So far I have tried compressing the spring by hand to see if it catches. I can get two coils over it without that happening.

    Any thoughts everyone?

Mmmmm......I think I'd be getting hold of Tinners with the spring dimensions and have him make a guide up for you. After all, the top hat was a gift, so overall spend still low and no concerns over the sleeve's integrity.

I made a spring guide sleeve from a thin brass sheet for an old twangy Weihrauch. Slots cut at one end, fold them out to sit under a washer beneath the spring. Twang cured, no reduction in power and has lasted for 5 years.
    Keen but clueless..

I think you'd be better off using steel tbh, aluminum hasn't got the best qualities .

If you can't find a tin can without ridges PM me and I'll send you a flat piece of can you can make a sleeve out of.

That pales into insignificance compared to putting the trigger back.

But you are right, although I have never heard of a piston sleeve self destructing.

I like your idea Waddy as it would involve buying extra beer Steel it must be if it progresses but sherlock has succeeded with it.

wd40 cans are steel, should last fine, just don't have it overlapping - better to leave a small gap
Always looking for any cheap, interesting, knackered "project" guns. Thanks, JB.

Sounds like a go-er, then. I stand corrected. Hope all goes well.

And I threw away some Mr sheen a few weeks ago which would have been perfect.
I've got to sneak a fridge magnet into Tesco now, test the cans and not look like a shoplifter.

Yes, I've done the magnet-in-the-supermarket thing!

But Waddy Paul has got one for you if your quest bears no fruit.

Anything softer than the spring will be abraded by it, and by increments join the lubrication inside the gun.

Have I told you I have found a motorsport manufacturer to make my guides? I should have the first batch this week. They’ll give you less pings! (Not infringing any copyrights there)

Air freshener cans are steel and were the cheapest when I went looking.

Shaving gel cans have the gel inside a sack so are clean when you open them.

I’ve used 18650 battery heat shrink on spring guides and they have lasted tins of pellets with no sign of issues I simply put a dab of superglue on the guide then shrank it on.
