Can't see the swastika myself, to be honest! But the final shape in red cloth looks wonderful. Congratulations on your fine work. I'm very envious!

Box lid done. I really don’t like the “Tell” label just doesn’t look right to me. Got to come up with something or leave it plain. Thought I might put a Sawstika on it for Danny but bad joke.

Another thought is a picture of the patent drawings.

Beautiful work Steve. That’s a lovely box you have made.
Can see why you are struggling to find a good original illustration for the box lid. Tell original graphics from the 30s seems v limited. No doubt mostly lost in the war. There is some early graphics here that may be suitable:

Although it dates from a 1902/3 catalogue. For example:

    No mention of “Tell” sadly.

I really like the Tell 3 original cardboard box artwork (which suggests to me that they cared and there must have been more at the time). However it does not reproduce well as it used very dark colour schemes.
    Well done again.

    Very nice job,
I prefer it this way, as you say the central pellet layout looked too busy.
Funny what you said about the swastika, I thought exactly that when I saw it, don’t know why.

    Great stuff,
    Matt

May have a winner, my wife said take a pic of the pellet tin. Cut of the 500 and some of the bottom to try to balance. Like the color and having both logos. Shape a bit odd but maybe best so far? Added a title to the patent drawing like it as well, not traditional but adds to the history. Still may just leave it blank, velvet is a rich look, sometimes less is more. See how it looks with the oil tin coming in a couple days. Boxing is really in all the details.

Steve, our fellow collector friend Eberhard asked me to relay the suggestion that you could use the logos here:

I saw that in my search but the color I think doesn’t work with the red velvet? I have pretty well decided to go with my orginal idea. I think though not the logo is the company’s German rendition of “Tell”? It looks better in person than in the pic, not as bright.

Power of the internet, Bruce Stauff, a major collector in the US just sent me so patent drawings from the US patent office. One of the drawings really strikes me cause it shows the pistol’s mechanism cocked and has the investor Wilhelm Foss acknowledged. The presentation is much better than my other patent drawing. This may take the cake, crazy cool?

While not wishing to bring anything negative to the debate, I must admit that whenever I see that particular trade, mark I think of Dennis Hiller's description of it in his air pistols book: "a standing man (William Tell) holding a break action air rifle, with what looks like a sex symbol between his legs".

He always did have a different slant on things!

It’s over, I just think the patent drawing from Bruce is just arranged so well. I like the idea that those that look at the pistols will see the mechanism and that William Foss is on the print as the inventor. To me the uniqueness of these pistols are an incredibly brilliant piece of engineering and the patent drawing kind of celebrates this. But the label is on with double sided tape not glue!

That’s what I’d use, and I’d be honoured that it was supplied by one of the most prolific vintage airgun collectors in Germany! (And Danny )
