A Milbro Diana 27 fits the role perfectly :-)
Do any of you ever just fancy an air rifle just for plinking ?
Nothing expensive or vintage but some thing in any calibre that may amuse you at any chosen time simply to pass away the odd minute or six ?
I usually finish off my range time or whatever with ten minutes of "wipe out" of all the pop-ups, metal crows, rabbits and grey squirrels with whatever gun I'm using at that time.
Tends to be a relaxing period after concentrating on achieving sub 5p groupings from whatever air rifle I'm in vogue with at the time.
Basically, a nice relaxing brief winding down session.
So....I may pop down to my local RFD to see what ever they have that might do the job !
Probably come back with a B***dy Venom !

Too many airguns!
I’d like a little ASI Sniper, fixed one up with all new parts some years ago that belonged to a fellow Warder and it was just a lovely thing.
Where is your go to local shop up by ?
Chiefy
Nice things happen to nice people.
The ASI Sniper was the gun I always wanted as a kid, our local gunshop had them on the rack, and for only £32!!
Back to the original question: I rarely shoot airguns at the range, so a lightly loaded .38 s&w probably doesn’t help. But anything old, probably ugly, hokey, pointless and less likely to hit the target would do.
How about an HW35?
Better to admit you walked through the wrong door than spend your life in the wrong room
Plinking is just the most fun you can have with an air rifle , reactive targets are just so good to shoot, a great way to destress and which ever gun you use it's just plain enjoyable, I like to use corks ,toy soldiers and 10mm pieces of chalk as targets and also 5p pieces held by a paperclip work well. Favourite for me is a Hw97k in 177.
The HW30S is the super accurate plinker you are looking for. But it’s been done to death and it must be feeling so smug by now.
So you need to go Old School.
The Original Diana 27.
The El Gamo Paratrooper aha ASI Paratrooper.
The BSA Meteor ‘Cadet’ with the rear mounted aperture sight.
The Haenal 303
The Milbro Diana 79
Open sights and some crappy Marksman pellets & some beer cans bottle tops and match boxes, plus some 1/32 polythene toy soldiers ..
I must admit I got an SMK XS19 from Pellpax back when they were on offer for £60 back in January last year. That brings a smile to my face, but equally for plinking at cans I’d grab, say, various Webley from the 70s/80s, or maybe a Meteor of different vintages from my collection. For the most part I’ve kept open sights on my plinkers. Prefer them that way.
New - HW30, Cometa 220 or Crosman Ratbuster?
Used - also add in Diana 24D / Diana 27. Old school HW50 if you can find one?

My brother brought my nephew a gamo junior hunter. Tiny little break barrel low power open sights .177 I had a few shots with it the other day, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Yep, many of those lower powered, ridiculously easy cocking junior rifles are fantastic for less serious plinking fun. So mild and funky. And usually accompanied by that lower price too. What's not to like?
Remember those little low powered Baikal sidelever jobbies that were available a few years ago for very cheap money? One of those would be good fun.

And if one is willing to give up the wonderful self-contained attraction of our beloved springers, the Crosman 1077 has always caught my attention. Looks like it would be a very handy and fun little thing.
(Might not be quite so good at that cold range you visit on a Winter's day though, John).
More additions......sorry, thinking out aloud here.....maybe also worth looking at the Hatsan 900X and Striker? And what about the junior little (Turkish, obviously) Webley Cub? I think NM, where your AM03 came from had them going cheaply recently.....

i love any gun for a bit plinking
Plinking is more of a mental attitude than the rifle / pistol used. I normaly start off with a bit of plinking to relax into the more serious side of shooting then plink the last few shots of my session.
Rabbit Stew, no artificial additives except lead.

Les..
Firstly: can’t use open sights Les due to my eyesight.
Secondly: of course I’m looking for an excuse to buy another gun !!
