Yeah I’ve been looking, strangely I’m there quite often as I’m a shooting man that goes fishing, the money spent in there fly fishing is quite a small fortune.

Took a job there also some 6 years ago when I was between contracts for 3 months, I know shop inside out and many off the staff well, the staff discount is unbelievable so won’t tell you any more.

My favourite plinker is my little Diana 24J in .22, lovely three ball trigger, 6ftlbs and minimal cocking effort.

What’s the Edinburgh branch like, I tend to get down there fairly often ?

Never been there, believe it’s quiet and not so knowledgeable staff. In GAC all the staff fish or have done like myself.

Given those size considerations, Chiefy, I'd say possibly the 99. Great out of the box but check for / do the cocking lever mod. Reducing the power slightly to suit your requirements will also result in an even sweeter firing cycle.

Collected the Meteor this morning, S/N TH34636 so it looks like a Mk. 5 with the plain beech stock (no cheek piece) with the black synthetic butt plate not rubber ventilated and no foresight hood.

Not bad condition at all overall, action and stock good. Scope grooves look deeper than I expected with both rear and foresights all there and functioning.
Feels decent on cocking, power seems to be there and not a deal of noise or grinding.
Removed the action from the stock and nothing untoward apparent. Bore and rifling looks good, gave it a pull-through a few times with a Napier kit.

Put approx twenty Eley Wasp 5.5 though it at ten yards in garden.
Dieseling to first few shots which settled later.
Trigger is definitely not a Rekord feeling stiff similar to Airsporter triggers, cant see if it will adjust ?

Quite pleased with it basically but an internal fettle will probably improve matters in future.
I'll try the opens for time being but eventually a nice slim scope may get mounted on it.
Couldn't run it through the Chrono today due to wet weather but maybe sometime later in the week !

I've got a couple of guns which I only use for "destruction" and would never use in competition or for live targets. One is a HW80k .25 in open sights. Easy to cock. Easy to shoot. Destroys everything it hits. The other was a .20 80 which I'm converting to .177 without touching the insides. So lower power, open sights and lightweight wadcutters. Nice and easy. No messing.

Hope your Meteor experience goes well, John. These will bring back lots of memories to many people - I had a Super Meteor back as a young teen.

With it dieselling a little, did the shop say whether or not it has had a recent service? And does cocking effort seem easy and smooth? The reason I ask is that the main thing to watch for would be a swollen / degraded buffer washer (behind the 'O' ring head). If you're not sure, and if cocking effort seems high, maybe better to give it a quick once over. A good fitting spring and guide set would also transform its manners. Some people have even gone as far as increasing stroke and fitting HW parachute seal conversions, resulting in remarkably good rifles, but it all depends how original you want to keep it.

Protek Supplies are an excellent source for parts for these (and many other guns).

Cocking effort isn't too bad and its fairly smooth but the gun hadn't been serviced by the shop. It would benefit from a service though in time just to update it to its original condition and performance as I don't need it to be highly tuned to something different or the character is lost. The trigger is a wee bit stiff but it helps if the ball of my trigger finger is placed on the end of the trigger tip and not the center. This does rub slightly on the inside of the guard when squeezing but its not a problem.

I intend to take it to the range one morning in the next week or two primarily to find out if I can make use of the open sights initially and at the same time put a good number of rounds through it. From firing a few shots yesterday with the opens at close range I think I'm going to be OK which would be great and I could always move the rear sight back to the cylinder end and try that OR try to find a Diopter that fits !
As I said above, I might find a nice small gloss black period scope if efforts fail !

Les, would FO be necessary for both front and rear sights or maybe one or the other ?
I suspect it'll be down to my eyesight at the end of the day.

    Thanks,
    John.

    Yes, fibre optic !
OK got that different colour for each sight !
Both sights maybe in focus, it’s the target that may not depending on what distance I set it at.

    Thanks Les.

    Thanks Les.
    I have the same problem.
I can put my distance specs on (for driving) and the target is in focus.
    But the sights are not.
Or don’t use the specs and it’s the opposite.
I can just about get away with it on the bell target (6yards) and bigger targets (tin cans) at 10-20 yards.
    Les..
