    BSA Meteor

Having cut my teeth on one 47 years ago, tried one at the bash and seen the thread on plinking rifles..which BSA Meteor is the pick of the bunch. Fancy a 70s super Meteor but what do members think is the best of the MK's.

I'm finding this difficult to answer succinctly.
The Mk 1 and 2 were IMHO the best technically with their iron sights and better triggers but I have seen no super versions.
Avoid the MK 5 unless you want to build up strength in your trigger finger.
So it's a Mk 3 or 4 super the 3 appears to have the most robust plastic rear sight but that doesn't matter if you put a scope on it because your eyesight's rubbish

My favourite is the Meteor Cadet with the peep sight as standard. You could get a Mk 4 Meteor Super with this feature as well. You can get a Welsh Willy parachute seal conversion nowadays and longstroke it for a bit more punch.

As mentioned before the 1s and 2s have the best quality but they also have the weird 16mm scope grooves. I have a steel Mk 2 end cap on my Mk 3 because plastic is a bit ick.

    69 to 73 Mk3
    74 to 78 Mk4

If you look very hard you can find a Mk2 with dovetails.

They made absolutely shedloads so be picky. The rearsight on my Mk 3 was made of some fragile plastic so avoid that one, it also has a one-piece cocking lever. So a late Mk IV might be the best. The scope grooves on these things are very very shallow and you will need a light scope. The Nikko Sterling Tiara 4x28 7/8” tube was best, not sure what the modern equivalent is or if there are any nice 3/4” scopes made anymore.

I've put Hawke 4X32s on three of mine with Sports match mounts which do grip.

This has got me thinking … My Mk1 which I got 50 years ago at the age of 14 is in my workshop somewhere It was my 2nd meteor, the first being a Mk3 with a very dark stock … I never used a scope back then and managed to shoot enough to feed the ferrets.
I should dig it out sometime 👍
Not sure where I`m going.....But I`ll get there someday

Get a Mk1. Nice stock, sights, and polished blue. They all went down hill afterwords. Maybe a Mk2. The rest are ... I'm not gonna say it. Millet scope rings fit the 16mm NP
The MK1 and 2 are very rare here in the states. But I found a nice Mk1 and it's neat. Was built to compete with the Diana 27 and it does. Plenty of Mk3,4,5's around here. Won't have one. Too cheesy.
Ithaca imported some real cheap painted ones here. Mk4?

    The mk3-5 were all enameled/painted.

I would go for an early mk3, which means steel rear sight.
The mk1/2 are nice guns, but the triggers can be a bit problematic if worn.
    Too many airguns!

The trip plate wears out but you can buy a replacement from JKI.

    Meteor

I’ve got a mk2 version. Owned it Proably best part of 50 yrs. although I had it serviced but the piston failed on me during session on the range. Have retired it now and since got a HW 57 to use.
