Sounds like the rear valve isn't closing, when it's shut it should press against the bar or block that the trigger sear rests on, if you press the block or blade down does it spring back ?

    firing pin

the firing pin is not getting engaged? the hole in the trigger section is half open and opens fully when you pull the trigger, how do you get to this part of the firing system ie taking it apart. any help much appreciated.

Check your trigger block is sliding properly and not getting stuck in the 'open' position. Where the firing valve slams into the recess upon firing, it can bulge the back of the block out and cause it to jam.

Also check trigger adjustment in that it isn't such that the block doesn't return to stop exhaust valve opening when pumping
