    Airgun Postage Cost

How much is it to post an air rifle these days? Is Parcelforce 48 still the preferred method?

Short answer, yes, as it's the only option for larger (lengths) that doesn't exclude airguns. Compensation is limited to £150 though, cost around £14
Pistols / shorter length (disassembled) rifles can use RM services, e.g. RMSD

RMSD is roughly £25 to send a short rifle or a rifle with action removed and stock (providing the package is not over a certain length (not sure on length requirements though)).

I know its based on the weight and compensation you need. The last gun I posted the cost was was £24.75 as I wanted the compensation that goes up to £2500 (the gun was bought for £1500).

I always budget around 20 for delivery on any guns I buy as it allows for them to be properly packed, PF48 is technically the only service they are allowed on but people seem to sneak them on others.
The site does do quotes so if you know your rough weight and dimensions of it parceled up it should give you a price.

Always wondered on how to post, do you state when they ask what you are sending and in the post office you say an air gun ?

you can pay for extra comp on PF48, but the limit for airgun compensation is £150, whatever you pay...

Yes, as more often than not they don't check but on the odd occasion they do you could find the Gun refused or worse, destroyed.
The only service that officially allows it is Parcelforce 48, all others they are listed as prohibited items and means any compensation etc if theres a problem is null and void.

I always reply "oh just a pellet gun". For some reason that seems to cause far less alarm than in the past when I've said "air rifle".

Post offices vary with attitude, my local one makes a fuss despite me knowing the post master for over 10 years. I got fed up of him phoning parcel force to check it was OK. I now go to a slightly larger town and have never experienced a problem.

It can be worth printing off or taking a screenshot of the section about restricted items which specifically excludes air guns from the prohibited weapons list.

Unfortunately for you the Parcel Force rules state that airguns are one of the many items for which excess compensation does not apply, even if you pay for it.
the Post Office will still try to sell it because A/ they make money off it & B/ the PO staff don't know every word of RM/PF rules by heart.

RMSD rules are slightly different because they class different compensation levels as different services, so if you pay for the service you have the basic level stated, £750/£1000/£2500.

It is up to you as the sender to know the rules on what you can & cannot post, the rules are on-line or pick up a leaflet (RMDG19) at the PO,

Guns are legal to post by their rules, so comply with those rules, and if asked say "it's an air rifle/pistol which is fully legal to post in accordance with the rules of guns for sporting use"
I'll have a copy of the leaflet in my pocket should the counter staff try to argue, but if you sound like you know the rules they generally don't.
