HW50 the original version. Spring option

Restoring a 1993 HW50, 22 cal, so the last of the line with a screw in end block. What spring is recommended? I'm thinking a factory 99 spring? Mach 1.5

    A reduced 99 works well👍

I don’t think the 99 spring fits. I sold an old 50 to someone and said this, they bought a 99 spring anyway and it doesn’t fit. Just saying.

Maccari or the appropriate cut down Titan.

You may be right. I made a kit for a Swedish customer, but having gone back through the details , it was an HW55, not a 50!

My old school HW50 will be next in line for a fettle once I've completed my 35 and I was going to be asking the same question. Obviously, subject to measurements etc., I was wondering if a TX Mk III spring might fit? No doubt a HW30 spring would fit, but I guess it would be a little too short and not "enough spring"?

Just had a quick look. Spring in one of ours is 205mm x 38 lb/inch , gives 30+ preload
Found what I believe to be 99 spec. 205 mm x 40 lb/inch. Dia. fits in 55 piston but snags severely in the 50 piston.
For me, a 20mm dia. would be best.
    More investigation to come.

Had another look through scribbles. Very likely that the 55/50 in original spec. use a spring 20mm or under dia. 220/230 long with 31/32 coils and low to mid 20's lb/inch rate.
This gives a pre load double what's in the rifle, above, dismantled for inspection.
The scribbles indicate the spring was original spec. at one time.
A bit garbled so hope it makes sense.

NO- OD - ID - Wire- Coils- Length

    06- 19.7- 13.3- 2.9- 39- 341

    13- 19.4- 13.0- 3.1- 39- 340

    All measurement in millimeters.

    Hope it helps.

    cheers

Taken from the Mainspring Data Thread. Springs which I thought may be too large or small removed. Are we thinking one of the above (suitably shortened)?

@ Nick, Tinbum, what are the measurements on your HW30 spring, Nick. I was rather hoping that this might be suitable, mated to matching guides, to give a nice, soft action?
