I've just started a refurbishment on my old school 55 so this is a great thread. I've already done the extraction of the Ox that someone had installed earlier.

Quick "mini-revival" and off at a slight tangent (sorry)......do the later produced versions of the old school HW50 use the synthetic seal?

And might anyone have any thoughts as to whether a TX Mk III spring or the one for the HW30 would work?

Yes, I’ve got both pistons. The leather one will give a bit more stroke with a Vortek conversion. But if you long stroke the T20 way you can use a AA seal.

Nice spring for the old 50 is the Maccari as suggested.

All 25mm sealed Weihrauchs changed to a synthetic piston seal in 1983, Tone.

I take it that this coincided with the introduction of the HW77 with its 25mm synthetic seal.

This would then follow the HW35 gaining a synthetic seal in 1981 with the introduction of the HW80.

    All the best Mick

Has anyone tried the chinese springs from service kits in the 25mm 50?
It works in old Meteors, but seems a bit stiff compared to other springs of its size.

Although I did buy a brand new HW35 in Autumn 1983 and it most definitely had a leather seal (as I later tried a TR Robb PTFE seal in it). I wonder if Hull Cartridge had a holding of earlier made guns in stock, or if HW continued to produce them a little later until all the older pistons / heads had been used up?

I still keep wondering whether the HW30 spring would work. If so, I'm thinking fitting a Tinbum HW30 kit might work well in the old '50 (guessing the TbT spring will be of larger diameter wire than the OE one too, which might help?).

I guess the best thing to do is strip it, measure the piston dimensions and stroke and take it from there....

I need to finish the '35 off first.

The 30 spring may work but you probably need a smaller spring guide and I think you will loose power.

Thank you, evert. As you say, I'm sure it will work, as in it will function, but might be a little shy on power. But I was thinking if the TbT spring is a little beefier than the OE and with a little extra preload, maybe? If I ended up with something around the 8.5 to 9ft.lbs mark, but shooting very sweetly, that will do.

I'll certainly check out the suitability of the springs for old Meteors and 25mm Gamos too.
