Valuation please with view to sell BSA Mercury magnum 635

This is now listed in collectable sales, this is not where to make the purchase.

Here I have a BSA Mercury Magnum 635 in .25 of course, presume mid 80's
Looking to sell but need a fair valuation, expecting I overpaid again originally
Light marks on the stock, a small ding on the left just back from the stock screw (pic 12) & and pair of light scratches in parallel by the right side at the butt pad (pic 10), but no more than to be expected for the age with a clearly little used gun, I've only ever displayed it.
Blue is very good but a little scratch at the front left of the trigger block (pic 11).
I don't want to start a Dutch auction but invite genuine offers for consideration.

Any sale will have to be collection only with paypal in advance or cash on collection.

Interesting to see the rear sight has been moved to near the trigger block. Was this a factory mod?

No they were originally on the barrel, as it hasn't got the bsa peepsight plate fitted i can't see the point of this mod tbh & wonder how well it's been fitted, threads cut for the screws etc. I'd say £200 for valuation.

Fascinating air rifle: I did not know they made these in .25. Do you think the sights can be re-fixed onto the barrel? I suppose, if so, the fixing screw at the rear could then be used for a recoil stud for a scope.

Not sure about the value. What does it perform at over the chrono, do you know?

That's what the '635' stands for.

So was this model supplied with the sights rear most (as they did with the Meteor Cadet which also left the unused holes plain to see) or do they belong on the barrel at the regular place?
Going to pop them off and see if the fixing point looks factory or modded.

Was certainly hoping the value was a bit more that £200 though.

I assume it is for 6.35 the mm equivalent of .25 ins.
What I don't know is whether it is .243 or .25
The more I think I know, the more I realise the less I know.

    Hi Steve,

From memory the rear sight was fixed to the barrel from the factory...but...BSA did do a scope arrestor that was indeed fixed to the cylinder and just in front of the back block.BSA scope grooves were quite shallow and if you didn't have the correct scope fixings things could move...and launching the .25 pellet might have made that worse?Maybe your's was drilled at the factory or later by a competent gunsmith...I did used to have a few of these curved metal arrestor blocks...

    Value wise...i'd go £250 for your's....

I can confirm the rearsight was intended to be fixed either conventionally over the breech or at the back of the cylinder, with a peep element that appears to be missing in this instance.

There was one at a few Kemptons before it sold around the £200 mark. From memory, it was not quite as nice as this one.

If it were mine, I'd probably start at £295 but be prepared to take a little less.

    Thanks for info and suggestions.
Gun is now listed in collectables for sale.
To avoid hiccups this is not the sale post, to avoid difficulties the new post is where to respond to re purchasing.

Sold mine for £150 about 5 years ago, maybe if you refix the sights on the barrel you might get a tad more but although they are good guns they are very limited for pellet choice as only milbro rhinos & bsa pylarms fit the tight bsa .25 bore without resizing & all the german .25 cal pellets are just too heavy for sub 12 springer use beyond 25 yards imho tbh. I loved mine but the .22 mercury challenger is much better & more practical I replaced it with. (for the same price)

Weird that, as mine had no screw holes at the rear of the cylinder for fixing the sight just the usual bsa shallow cut dovetails for a scope.

Not sure if this link will work but this exploded diagram from Chambers shows the two rearsight fixing holes on top of the cylinder.

Not sure why yours did not have them? I guess you just never know with BSA.

I had a Deluxe years ago and that did have the extra holes.

Possble mine was an early one before they thought of that, I got it for £100 with a broken mainspring & worn blueing, fixed it up got it shooting well at 11 ft/lbs, polished it myself & paid £50 to get it hot blued & barely got my money back on it. Was great fun to bash tin cans with though but I built it as a ratting gun, then all the rats vanished for the 5 years I owned it....typical.

I've had a couple over the years....both stock versions...no screw holes at the rear of the cylinder.
