    Webley Osprey Barrel

Does anyone know how to remove the barrel from the Osprey? I understand that it unscrews, but is it awkward/difficult?
The blacking/bluing on the action is fine, but there's a long scratch along the barrel. So I would like to reblack just the barrel.
Also it would be easier to strip down.

I guess it is glued, so you may have to apply some heat before screwing it out.

Would a heat gun be ok?
If I used a blow torch could it damage the blacking?
    Also,if it's glued, what should I use to re-glue?

Hi Toni, glad to see you’re progressing with the Osprey! The barrel is threadlocked (Loctited) into the action. It’ll need locally heating in the area forward of the tap to break it free, and has been mentioned it does unscrew.

I think you’d be lucky to manage it with a heat gun, but it might. I’ve always used a flame, and in my experience it has had to get pretty damn hot before it’ll start to turn. The Loctite has to break down and you’ll know this when it starts to smoke and weep from the join. If you use a flame you will probably get some discolouration in the bluing. Let it cool naturally in the air, don’t be tempted to spray it or dunk it in water.

    Cheers

Cheers Greg, so when I'm ready to reassemble I should just use Loctite to seal it?

Nearly set fire to my bench yesterday
Couldn't get the damn barrel off
Ended up polishing the whole action with barrel, I'll reblack it as one piece. Grrr

Not wishing to state the obvious but you did remove the rear sight on the breech block as the base of the screw for the rearsight dimples into the barrel

I’d have thought he’d have melted the sight if he hadn’t?

To be honest, I assumed he would have taken it off first being its some sort of cheap alloy and likely to melt but always worth mentioning.

If you’d just done the barrel it would have come out two-tone.

I've stripped it down completely. I took photos but I still reckon I'll be having fun putting it back together, it's definitely not as simple as a Vulcan.
It is nice and shiny now It's back to bare metal though. I have to find a receptacle long enough for me to re black it.
Onwards and upwards as they say.

    See next page.
