The latter is where two different models of airguns fit the same ecological niche. For example at the moment the glided 97K needs assessing against the ProSport as the primary scoped full-power target springer in .177.
Yeah, that's what I've been applying... I don't need 10 different .177 springers to plink knockdowns rested at the club.
But I also apply the "how easy is it to replace" criteria....
So whilst the walnut TX200SR, the 22mm NickG TX, and a 24mm sleave down HW80 might all meet that same requirement, they are all tough / expensive to replace - so I have to keep all three 
Bog standard stuff tends to get sold...But even my beloved Rapid went on the "how many .177 multishot PCPs do I need ?" criteria...
