Simple answer. No. Mach 1.5
If you could start your own gunshop.
Would you?
Far too many rifles to list now, all mainly British but the odd pesky foreigner has snuck in
Simple answer. No. Mach 1.5
In France (or most places on the continent), yes.
UK, no.
nah, not over here. too much regulation, too much tax, too much negativity, and it'd kill my enjoyment of the hobby.
Always looking for any cheap, interesting, knackered "project" guns. Thanks, JB.
I think an airgun shooting centre with a gun-shop/workshop attached might be ok. A high-ish annual membership fee, training courses etc. It wouldn't work economically as land is too expensive in most of the UK.
Protek seem to have a good model, with an outdoor clothing store running in parallel and some niche knowledge about certain airgun marques to give it interest. T.R.Robb with his small engineering shop turning out interesting bits and pieces must enjoy the work, and isn't open every day.
But just running a straightforward commercial gunshop day-to-day would be suffocating I think.
Running any kind of shop seems to me to be one of the worst careers, and hats off to those who do it. Even being out and about as a delivery driver seems more appealing than staring at racks of unsold shotties and SMK springers and wax cotton jackets etc...
You could get yourself an RFD though Pete and start in the business in a small way, you don't necessarily have to open a shop. You just need some strong cabinets and alarms and stuff.
About 15 years or so ago I did a brief stint working in an RFD
Back then I was more ‘into’ the hobby and in general it was a fairly good craic.
However I don’t think I would have the same motivation nowadays to even consider working in an RFD let alone setting one up the red tape for starters would drive me insane
When I worked at the RFD it was a bit of an eye opener seeing it from the other side of the fence so to speak.
The profit on decent gear was far less than I ever imagined which was countered with far more profit on the cheap nasty tat which really makes one think about the build quality and QC which worried me especially considering the trigger on a cheap full power rifle should it ever fail.
I’ve seen Gamo triggers fail before and a friend at another RFD seriously hurt his finger with a trigger failure.
Some of the suppliers were a complete ballache to deal with especially warranty returns and lack of spares on the cheap fodder basically stack em high sell em cheap mentality![]()
In general most customers were decent enough but some were a reet mix of oddballs
On more than one occasion customers would raise my eyebrow and some could be extremely hard work especially when they really didn’t have a clue![]()
When I lived overseas, my mate sold off a couple of farms and started a gun shop. Last time I was there he had a stock of 2700 rifles, pistols and shotguns. Think it was a bit a nightmare getting the stock of guns and ammo checked regularly by the police. Don't know if he regretted going into the business.

BE AN INDEPENDENT THINKER, DON'T FOLLOW THE CROWD
I have to say a Protek style shop would appeal, there used to be a secondhand shop in Shirley High Street in Southampton called Handleys (I think), they did rifles, fishing gear, remote control models, knives, airsoft, even porn mags and films, his pellets where the cheapest around, great place for older air rifles.

After working for three well known outlets. Absolutely not a prayer.
No profit whatsoever and the number of 'customers' who defy all sense of, well, sense, is breathtaking.
Plus, the amount of tales of, 'I shot a rabbit at 200m with a B2, guns are a tool, it's worth more than that second hand, its not rust, it's patina, a friend borrowed it and did that, etc etc', does become boring after the umpteenth time in an hour.
A good tip to take into any gunshop is, your tale has been told before. And laughed at.
Put on heading 270, assume attack formation
if i did it would not be in this country
you only get one life live it to the best of your ability
I dare say that's why SFS is still for sale..!! Mach 1.5
It's a no from me. Even if I was interested the UK economy is all wrong at the moment.
