    Webley Junior information required

    https://imgur.com/a/CZUdzQt

I have recently acquired this air pistol which I believe is a Webley Junior. The serial number is J19881 and it looks like 881 stamped on the end of the cylinder. Apart from 'googling' I know nothing about these pistols and would like to know more. Is there anyone who can give me a rough guesstimate of its manufacture date, and I hazard a guess that the screw and nut holding the handles on is not original unless someone tells me different! Does anyone know where I could get a breech seal as the original looks fairly distorted?
Many thanks for any info here.

It looks like a pre-war version. If you go on google and type in webley junior pre war there are quite a few photos. It does look in a bit of a sorry state but with a lot of TLC I am sure you could make it look fairly reasonable. For breach seal you could try Chambers guns,Protek and John Knibbs. Best of luck.

Have just checked my book and yes it is a pre war junior made about 1930.

Roughly speaking this is a mid 1930s Junior. The grips are not original and there is considerable wear to the finish. Also, I've never seen one with a screw securing the left side of the frame to the chamber. Sadly these things will affect value as tidy examples are not uncommon. In all honesty, this pistol will have little value to a collector.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

    Kind regards,

I was wondering about that screw. My concerns are why is it there and does it just put pressure on the cylinder or does it go into the cylinder wall?
Has the cylinder been moving ? (unlikely) or changed? Or has the hole been there for some other reason and and the screw is blanking it?
Guns like this seem to interest me these days as I tend to work backwards to try to find out why some thing has been done.
Hopefully the thing will still plink well. Ive found that some of these old rough ones do.
Scrounging a used rubber seal from a later pistol and sanding it down as the Junior ones are shallower is a cheap option

Many thanks for your answers, it's made the gun quite intriguing. Can anyone steer me towards a strip-down as it cocks, but doesn't latch? A strip-down will hopefully tell me the reason for the strange screw.

I imagine, the screw was an aftermarket repair to prevent the steel compression tube from being loose, or rotating in the cast iron frame. I guess it is a shallow threaded screw that just screws into the wall of the compression tube. Might have been better to have re-soldered the tube in position ?

Anyway a fun plinker if nothing else. Someone obviously though enough of the gun to go to the trouble of repairing it.

Fascinating piece of history (or junk depending on your attitude). As a collector I disagree with some opinions, I love the odd ball gun and would welcome the opportunity to obtain this sorry but interesting specimen. What is the logo set in the grip? Who took the trouble to make the grips and Guy's comment re that screw, why? If you want to off load it please keep me in mind.

Otherwise , yes 1930's Junior, probably was originally tin grip, someone loved it then. If you want to sell it please put me first in line.

The early Pre-War, wood grip Junior is my favourite version of this neat little pistol. Great shame Webley went over to pressed steel grips which in my opinion anyway spoiled it’s whole appearance and desirability.
