Depends where its situated tbh, even without camping you'll still need waste managment as there will always be that one person who leaves their rubbish behind and you can't exactly ok people peeing in a bush when you're running it as a proper facility.
If its close enough to a sewer and water line you could probably plum a couple of Toilets in, basic shower if needed etc, failing that theres ways around it that aren't too hideous as long as the use isn't excessive, rubbish wise probably a simple dumpster collected once a month will do, weekly if its peak periods etc.

Best way to work it probably is to use somewhere thats already got some level of facilities on it, like a Farm building etc, and then adapt it to your needs.

The situation I'm in is that I already own and run a clay shoot with club house and toilet etc. I was thinking about adding an airgun range but for the economic reasons previously outlined it just doesn't seem worth while which is a shame really but if it doesn't make money then it's a lot of effort for not much return.

If you already have all that the big difference is probably can you build it yourself or do you have to pay silly money to have somebody build it.

I can build it myself but it will still cost lots to do properly and it won't repay very quickly at £8 for 3 hours. I feel I may be sounding a bit mercenary here but really I think you ought to be able to invest in a facility such as this and it be worthwhile.

I pay £50/year membership and £10 per visit for up to all day, I normally do about 3 hours or so. It would cost a non member £15 per visit which I know puts a lot off.
Can’t see how you’d do it for much less than that if running as a venture that at the very least had to break even.
    Regards,
    Dave.

I once had a pay to shoot, on a beef farm. I think it was £120 a year. Fields and woodland. Pest control and if you took your own targets, practice. Facilities ? You had your own key to the farm gate, a map of the boundaries and a hardcore car standing parking. Absolutely free viewing of planes at Biggin Hill air show as the farm was only down the road, so after a dawn raid on the rabbits you'll watch the planes and maybe stay for a dusk raid on the rabbits later. You took a folding spade for a tom tit, took any rubbish home as that was all the facilities.
Your own shooting insurance was vital to join.

Sounds like you already have most things that you need apart from targets .
Why not budget £500 on knockdown targets , and spinners , set at various distances .
£10 for 3 hours is not going to take long to get your investment back .

I applaud your intentions but.. i reckon you would be better off trying to find somewhere with abandoned buildings to set up in, on old commercial chicken shed or piggery perhaps, the owner may be more inclined for a shooting venture than other places with objecting neighbours, a few extra quid for the use of an empty shed may be welcomed,
    Good luck to you,

Yes, I saw those targets at JSR, assume they are ok? They seem excellent VFM. Most of the costs I was looking at are putting up a full length fence to section off the area and building a shelter to keep the customers dry whilst shooting. I reckon the materials alone would be £5k. Maybe I could start off in a cheaper, simpler way and see how things progress but I think I would at least need to fence the area off and make it secure. Are people happy to pay that kind of money and shoot outdoors?

I pay £50 yearly membership and £8 for all day shooting, definitely wouldn't pay £15 for 2 hours, hth Mark.

Sounds like a good idea to me as the facilities are already there.
Thimbleby charges £16 for two hours but only have a shed with 4 positions.
Oaklodge charge £12 for 3 hours but has roughly 12 positions, but they mounted a Clay trap to the roof of the shed which shakes the whole thing so isn't very busy.

Yet Brian at Donny charges £15 for 2hr 45mins and has 18 positions and is very busy all the time.

Suppose it depends how quickly you want the return, how much effort you are willing to put to make it the venue in the area? How many Air rifle shooters might start Clay Pigeon? Etc.

A very challenging situation to be in, trying to balance the cost against keeping the pricing at a level that will ensure it attracts customers.
I'm afraid I can offer no advice on that as I have zero interest in shooting at a range, if I want to shoot targets from a bench, I can do so in my garden,
the only idea I would float is maybe to have something a bit different like timed or moving targets, that might be a special attraction.
    Best of luck with it.

That definately could work and like I mentioned before you could always see if a sponsor will help, some targets or maybe donations to the set up costs in return for some signage and reccomendation.
