Car wise the Triumph Stag owners club were there
The only guns on show were on 1/16 scale r.c tanks
The Spitfire however was of the Supermarine variety

Hahaha! I bet that's lovely, Craig. Guessing it's another 77? That's the thing with some rifles. At first you think "this'll make the ideal wet weather gun" as it isn't so nice cosmetically. But then, once you've put some work and a little bit of yourself into it and then it goes and impresses with a fine performance, you feel it merits some cosmetic embellishment and then you might not want to get it wet.

On the ones of mine that fall under this category (and partly due to lack of enough time / experience in this area), I tend not to refinish them, just cleaning with oil and retaining the used look. But it still makes you reluctant to subject them to adverse conditions.

But then, if I think back 40 to 45 years ago, and you might have had just the one rifle back then. At some points, two or three. I had more time for shooting. Shot at the club and down the farm. Used the rifles lots more. And that rifle you had meant just as much to you then, but you seemed to accept getting it wet as part of the package.

The two of my rifles that I've owned the longest (my HW77 which became my Vantage and my main hunting rifle, Venom HW80) have both had a fair few soakings in the 80s and 90s and still look beautiful today.

I don't think it's going to be anywhere near as hot next weekend, Pete.

I bet you still had a lovely day. Love those old Spitfires.

What's this rifle you have so carefully and lovingly assembled, then?

I've just had another quick look on the BBC forecasty thing (info provided by the Met Office, I think) and, obviously, a fair bit can change between now and then, but it's saying light rain showers (more likely from mid-afternoon onwards), a gentle breeze and a high of 26 for Saturday. Will keep looking in.....

I think you’re spot on with what you’re saying.
I’m pretty much in the same camp regarding having just the one main gun and just using it regardless of weather conditions, a good wipe down with the stock off after a soaking and re oiling.
But I find it hard just getting a few spits of rain on any gun nowadays..

    Absolutely, Les.

I'll not take them outside if I'm at home and it's raining. And at The Bash, it it starts spitting, at the very least they go back in the slips. More often than not, in the slips and into the car.......

I must get the trigger parts located and fitted to that manky nail of a Supersport that I have, as that really is the ideal wet weather tool..In fact, I remember vividly how much fun was had with that on the Sunday at the last Bash we had at Mick's.....it was the Sunday and it was raining. It had been raining for days and there was loads of water everywhere. I can remember Mark, CapitalBee, Gav and Snooper601 being there, amongst others. And Dave from Chesterfield who I'd introduced with his new 99. There was a pumpkin on the field and it was great fun shooting that. It wasn't half making some strange noises when it was hit and the Supersport / .22 Hobby combo was taking big chunks out of it. And water cascading off it, making it look even more dramatic.

As a bonus, I even got tugged off by Mick at the end of the day!

From 11 am until 7 pm only 17 % to 31 % though, that's not chance it's area apparently, but seems to work like chance. As long as the fire wood is dry & the tents are dry come Sunday morning it probably won't amount to much. Still a fair way off & things will change.

There is very little wind forecast , 8mph Sat, and even better 4 on Fri, so the gazebos will be fine & it will be good for shooting. Might be worth wasting a tin of pellets trying to hit the bucket on Friday

Was the pilot trying to trim the grass?

    It's always a 77, mate

I think you're right about having more time, back then. I was certainly more eager to get out and about shooting and doing the maintaining bit, years ago. Now with two kids and two jobs, I plain don't have the time or inclination. I may go HFT shooting once a month, foxing/hunting every few months. Whereas years back, I was HFT'ing twice a week religiously and hunting most nights.
My H/FT rifles are used in all weathers and get suitably looked after - but it's a total nause taking them to bits and re-zeroing etc after a soaking. So I try to stick to decent weather when shooting those, unless I get a real urge to go ( which is rare ).
My rimfires and full bore rifles are used in all conditions, year round. But they literally take a tenth of the time to strip and maintain compared to an air rifle - the AR15's come to bits in under a minute, so I'll happily bury those in a sea bed and maintain them with a hosepipe and a drop of Hoppes.
My 'Bash rifles', which only see the light of day three times a year, are therefore in something of a middle-ground. If they get a soaking they'll obviously be stripped down but I also know they'll be left in bits until a week before the next Bash, as they're not 'needed to be at hand'.
So these pair should fill the gap nicely. One is lacking in the blueing stakes - meaning I'm not going to be broken hearted if it forms a few more rust spots and the other is Cerakoted, if that gets marked it'll be touched up with paint.
See you next week, whatever the weather.

I saw this a while back, he must have always been careful with them considering the things he got up to back in the day
