How much heat is required to enable the cut-end coil to be folded down? Can this be done with a 'handyman' gas-canister torch or does one need access to oxy-propane or an oxy-acetylene torch? After having been heated, I believe, the spring should not be 'quenched' but should be left to cool 'naturally.' Comments, guys? Regards ... Geek

As the other guys have said - it's a lot less heat than you think. You should be able to hold the rest of the spring while heating it.

Only one thing I can say to that, "Cool." Thanks Paul.Originally Posted by Paul Hudson

Hi,
The end you want to quench down should get dark to medium cherry -red.
Use a wet rag to save the rest of the spring and your hand, than quench it down immediately 100% upright on a warm/ hot steel-plate. ( a cooking-plate works great )
You should temper it for a hour at 180°to 190° Celsius in your oven , but you should not trust the marks on the oven-knob.
Jochen
Needless to say that the spring has to be 100% clean?

hi mate, yep should work with a blowtorch etc., have heard you are spose to quench then heat to straw yellow then quench to temper it
