Air arms s400 a new one mail order will cost just over £300. Also BSA Hornet, Ultra, But go to a good local gun shop and try a few first it might not suit you. Then you need to think a bout how you are going to fill it and a scope.
I just went down to a local range today with my smk break action (gasp!).
I knew It would be bad but I didn't expect it to be that bad!
Fortuantly A guy down thier was busy talking to some other people and he let me use his pre-charged rifle. Well I was instantly hooked, with mine I was lucky to hit anything but with his I was placing almost every shot on the kill zones of the target. So, I have now decided I should buy a pre-charged rifle and a decent scope.
Can anyone recomend a gun and scope for a beginer? My limit is £600 but I have a job now so that may get higher.

for your first pcp you cant go wrong with an s200
I have been looking at air arms but anoyingly they don't have the prices on thier website
Very accurate guns, but they are quite small in size. I don't consider myself to be of big stature, and I can't shoot it.Originally Posted by aeron

Check out BAR, Uttings and JSRs web sites for prices.
For gun prices look at:

Or

I'm also a bit confused on scope ratings is a scope more powerfull if both the numbers are high?
which would be better out of a 6x40 or a 9x40
Right scopes, can be fixed mag or variable mag.
Fixed mag will be one number follwed by the size of the front lens e.g. 4 x 40
A vari mag scope will have two numbers the lowest and highest mag available then the size of the front lens e.g. 4-12 x 40

Thanx for all the info
Thats ok, maybe I didn't completely explain that obviously the first number or two if it is variable is how many times larger than life the scope makes the image appear.
And the second number e.g. the 40 is the size in mm of the front lens, I think called the objective lens.
So in answer to your original question the scope has more magnifying power if the first number is high, and normally the larger the objective lens the higher the light gathering capabilities are but TBH it has more to do with the quality of the glass IMO

For a good starter set you wont get any better than a J S Ramsbottom mega deal, I don't know if they are on the site but they are on the PDF of the mag advert or obviously in the mags. IIrc they are all in your price range and you get a gun a silencer and a scope and a good deal on a bi pod. I changed from a lightning to a aa s410 2 days ago but it's got a valve prob, wont fill, so it's going back 2mo. Other than that I love the gun and have had about 30 shots with the charge that came in the cylinder for very little loss of pressure around the 100 bar mark on the gun gauge.
I was surprised to see that the handpumps are about £100!
£100 for an air pump.
S400 with a decent 3-9x40 on top will do you just fine,Like its been said give JSR a ring, you'll also have to get some charging gear too,so allow for it in your budget, you really are spoilt for choice though
Get a logun /hills,you'll need a moisture filter with it.Originally Posted by Ludford
