The Ruger Old Army in .45 (not .44) is a modern-design revolver and is excellent & comes in stainless steel. Not the right spec for alot of the comps though, but a very fine revolver for shootin'.

I have indicated a few times here and there that I have a hankering for a .36 BP pistol - Navy Colt type as per Wild Bill Hickok. Previously, I had thought that only Uberti made them but looking on Guntrader revealed that there are several makers, including Colt themeselves (albeit pricey).
So, in the opinion of those of you who are familiar with BP pistols which is the best manufacturer and why?

The Ruger old army is an exeptionally well made revolver and if looked after will last a lifetime and beyond. Due to a gammy wrist i found mine too heavy for a full mornings shooting and the grip was too small. A different aftermarket grip was better but it was still just too heavy for me. If money was no object then it would probably be a hege Rogers and Spencer. I have a Euroarms Rogers which is a great gun to shoot but the hege seems to be about the best quality pistols iv ever seen. Having said that iv got a slot for a .45 pistol so if a Ruger old army with 51/2" barrel comes up cheap, i could be tempted!
Pedersoli or Hege IMHO If you have the money and the inclination to compete that is? If you just want it for the smoky fun of punching holes and getting stinky then a Ruger old army in stainless

I agree with all that's been said before! The Ruger Old army in stainless is great. I've had mine eleven years and it looks like new. I would avoid any variant of Colt open frame revolver. Their lack of sights makes accuracy problematic. Also the wedge loosens in time. Pedersoli or Hege as said before make the best Pistols and revolvers although the Euroarms Rogers and Spencer and Remington NMA is worth a look. I believe the Feinwerkbau R & S is actually made by Euroarms.
Also as I understand it " GENUINE " Colt repros are made under contract in Italy any way
The Feinwerkbau Rogers & Spencer is supplied to Hege, for final assembly, from FWB. There is no comparison between this gun and the Euroarms. It is made from Krupp seel and is a superb gun. I've regularly used mine for over 10 years and it's still as tight as the day it was made.
