Everyone knows what a yard "is" and I suspect most people can estimate a yard knowing its slightly less than a meter. But I'm pretty sure most people don't know that 1 yard equates to exactly 0.9144 meters Have you bought a tape measure recently? they don't even use yards anymore.

No, but they do use feet, and 1yd = 3feet exactly, you just need to be able to divide by 3.
If you have a tape just marked in inches then its 36 of those to 1yd, and to make it easy they usually colour every twelfth inch red, those are the feet markers, since there are 12inches in every foot. So at 36 inches, the 36 will be red (or some other distinguishing colour) and that is 1yd.

Here is a definition of a foot, just to complete the lesson.

There was a Roman unit called a pes (plural pedes) which means a foot, and was 29.59cm, which is nearly the size of the modern foot. There were twelve uncia to a pes as well (see inch).
The foot has been used in England for over a thousand years. The foot, a length of the human foot, was anything from 9 3/4 to 19 inches (my foot is 11 inches). It was not until 1844 that there was anything resembling a real standard. In that year the British government created a standard master yard in a length of bronze, marked off in feet and inches. Click here for a photo of a similar one in Trafalgar Square. School rulers in Britain are usually a foot long (30 cm).

    Hi all.

I'm now educated on the yardage & got it all sized up now

I have been thinking on how to make the comp site more user friendly & have written down the format, just need to find the time to make it happen.

Just not enough hours in the day, I can't really cut down on my sleep as I only get about 4hrs anyway
