What puts you off shooting Field Target (FT)

I have some theories based on non Ft shooters views, as to why some shooters do not shoot Ft. The result of not shooting FT is either they shoot Hft or just plink?

So, I am looking for comments from non Ft shooters as to why they dont do Ft shooting / comps? Whats off putting about Ft?

Not many local FT clubs about although I think its fair to say a few of of us HFT fellas would like to try it more often .

I have only tried it at the Air Arms meet a couple of years back at Bisley and I really enjoyed it .

Another popular misconseption is the fact you need a very expensive set up to compete .

Pretty much what Dave said. Between SHS and SiHFT that gives two good regular HFT comps covering the whole year and visits to lots of clubs all within 1.5 hours. For me HFT is so much more convenient, if there was a local club and series I'd definately be doing FT as well as HFT.

Same as any sport, at the top end, if you dont, or cannot invest for top end kit, you can only play at it. If you want to have some fun, try it and invest as you go along. if its not for you have a go at hft can be a little easier on the wallet to start with, as most guns are accurate enough out of the box. where as ft guns are fettled tuned customized etc etc. I just have a go at both dont want to do comps any more as growing family and commitments prevent it .

Horses for courses I would imagine,

Kitting out for HFT is expensive enough with fixed 10 or low mag (compared to FT anyway) scope.

Having to have another rig set up for FT, and learning to shoot with it is probably beyond most people's wallets and available time.

I don't do it because of HFT and family commitments.

I tried to gauge interest last year with a few of the Sussex HFT chaps and I think most would try it , that's not to say they would shoot FT often as the HFT calender is fairly full .

I also asked fellow club members if we could put a FT shoot on a while ago - again if the interest was there it would be worth a try although it would be at the most basic level and accessible to all regardless of KIT .

Different reasons for me.

I have to travel quite a way for my HFT shooting anyway. There are lots more FT clubs 'near' to me. All probably 45 mins to an hour away ... Byley ... Millride etc.

I've actually got a 'FT' rig, so to speak. It's a HW77k in a custom Paul Wilson style FT stock with a Custom Shop scope.

I just simply cannot get into a comfy FT shooting position with my dodgy back and body shape.

I'm a dwarf at 5 feet 8 but my body is quite long and my legs are very short. Trying to get into the FT sitting position is hopeless. I've tried the arms folded ... one hand on front knee ... all sorts. I just can't get comfy at all.

The stock has a large adjustable hamster but that doesn't seem to help.

There is no way I could hit anything as my sitting stance is just so wobbly.

In HFT I can get very steady shooting prone and I'm comfortable with the kneelers and standers ...

... so that's why I shoot HFT and not FT.

Well reading this Thread - HFT , SHS and SiHFT FT , have no idea what anyone is talking about ( I'm not thick just highliting something ) .

Too technical , not enough info , a bit to clicky - if you're not already genned up then you will be looking silly , and some are too bashful to show their ignorance and look daft .
What gun / calibre for what discipline , how /where and why are all asked by people how would get involved .
Shooting is about fun , and stress takes this away . Thats why many traditional shooters who would be really good at these new disciplines don't bother getting involved , and just plink .
