    Parkerized HW97

A while back I posted to the forum asking for alternative metal finishes, I have a 77K with Colin at MAG for bluing but wanted something different for the 97. The gun came to me in a sorry state, someone in its previous years had installed a mad spring to this rifle which had bent the cocking lever, elongated holes and shook the silencer to pieces. This means without spending serious cash (cocking levers new are 65quid) anything i did was somewhat of a compromise although would be fully usable.

To show what a mad spring will do to a 97 check these first pics:

As the gun was being cocked the cocking lever was bending to one side, this looks to have stretched the steel on the pivot point and elongated the pivot hole. I straightened the lever, heated and re shaped the pivot point and re hardened it a little, at one point i considered making Phosphor bronze bushings for it but these were not needed.I had a friend tig weld the cocking lever catch body to the silencer.

The parkerizing was carried out by forum member Knight Guitars (Alan) the price was competitive and his communication was very good. Remember you will always get slightly different shades with parkerizing, this did not worry me as i actually feel it adds some character.

    Few pics for you:

I still have the ButPad to finish or change and baffles to be added to the small silencer...overall though the parkerizing has added to the camo theme of the gun. It soaks oil up like a sponge also and does look to be very durable.
This gun is no prize winner, but i do feel its very presentable now and an awesome hunting tool.

    I like it.

I'm sure you've blacked the stock bolts by now, it stands out like a light left on in farmhouse on dark night in the pic.

What's the trigger blade? Looks non standard.

Well done on saving the 97, I think the metal work and paint job tie together nicely.

Glad to know your happy with the finish Tony, Wiggan the finish is designed to be harder wearing then standard bluing thats why its mil spec for the Us army since ww1 the shotblasted surface also holds oil better then a polished surface.

I really like that, good looking work chaps.

I have ordered black, the stainless will do for now. The blade is a Rowan set back straight blade in Black (Alu)

Going to see if Brass black will tone down the bronze lever catch as well.

Good. I'll be able to sleep now.

Hadn't seen that Rowan were doing those in black, nice.

Where did you get the Socket button stock bolts if you don't mind me asking? Last ones I got came from SFS, but I will be needing some more soon and don't have my HW to measure up otherwise I could order some from fastfix.

    Many thanks.

The screws in the for end are countersunk m5 x15mm, i turned some Acetal cups to take them...I order screws off the bay as well as buy locally when needed.

for button head in black you could use these at 16mm long 300553199263 but these at 12mm long 300551592459 would probably be better

if you have cups machined up you need min 15mm long countersunk screws

Or you could trim these down a bit, no cups needed 290561150939

Make sure everything is straight, any deep scratches you may want to polish out. The the surface will be blasted evenly...and then boiled in the parkerizing solution.

One point i missed before, the barrels are parkerized inside and out, i saw NO loss of accuracy although I did panic at first. To clean the barrel i used a pull thru, then 20 Ubolts were shot thru it before i tested with AA fields and Accupells, the velocity was right where it was before I shipped it to Alan to be parkerized...accuracy at the club was 15mm groups 30 yrds rested 5 pellets (if i concentrated LOL)

Its actually shooting Ubolts pretty nice also, 715FPS 10gr with accuracy for 11.35FPE.

Average airgun action and barrel £35 +p&p any small parts that you include we will do for free and the rates get cheaper the more stuff we put in the tank. You dont need to do any prep if you dont want to but we charge £2.50 to de blue a barrel or action and around £1 for smaller parts really small bits are again free. The sand blasting can get out some fairly heavy damage I'v managed to blast 80g sanding marks out recently also the matt finish is less likely to show pitting or damage compared to a glossy blued finish again there is a small surcharge if the part need a lot of blasting. We can also get a shiny finish if you want to polish your parts before they get to us.
