I'm restoring 2 compact pistols as a project (retired & getting bored) iv'e done 1, the second 1 needs a left side grip which was missing iv'e only got basic wood work tools & a Dremel i would appreciate any hints or tips for making this grip. No problems with stripping the guns just with the grip. Last time i made some i had my work equipment available. ...mike...

    Hi there

Depending on how complex the grip is you should be able to make them with just a file, a small saw, a drill and some sand paper.
I occasionally make wood grips for my umarex 1911 which is quite a simple design so it doesn't take long or require any special tools.
If you can post any pics it would give me an idea about what sort of tools you might need for your project.

    Regards

I made grips for my crosman from laminate which helps for fast removal...just score deep enough and split the un-needed lamination away.

    Much rarer I'm afraid,
it's a Pardini Fiocchi P-10, I bought it leaky so it was fairly cheap but it was a left hander too.
So after making new polyurethane barrel and breech seals and replacing the valve and piston O rings, then failing to find a second hand grip I made one

    Mike,
I used an angle grinder for quickly sculpting (it burns the wood but not deeply) and a couple of rough rasps for shaping (round & half round), a belt sander for flat areas and then 80, 120 & 360 paper in order, internal radii I sculpted with various sized sanding drums mounted in a pillar drill, it took me about 2 days from block of wood to finished oiled grip,

Ive made a few myself now.

I draw round the grip, cut a rough outline and make it just as thick as the widest point. Then just attack it with a dremel and a course sanding drum. Finish with various grades of sand paper then steel wool and finally oil.

I was going to make a set for my 1377 and I considered a trial run with some pine but decided that, if I was going to go to all that time and effort, I might as well just do it with a decent bit of wood that I could at least use if they turned out well enough. So I cut the basic shapes out of some nice hardwood I'd been given but still haven't been able to bring myself to start shaping them!

I did find that the close grained Canadian Maple helped a lot, it doesn't chip or raide splinters easily and was a joy to work, I bet I change my mind when I'm trying to make some grips for the Umarex S&W and then chequer them

I won a pair of cocobolo wood scales from america the other day. Im going to make a pair of 1911 grips with it then either stipple or checker them. Can you recommend where to buy a checkering tool from?
