It is the only way to precisely date airguns produced after WW1, as BSA stopped issueing and despatching them in strict chronological order. so, they have a monopoly on the information.
Medium/High demand v very limited supply = high price
Noticed this BSA guns information and dating service now being offered by John Knbbs. Sounds a bit expensive, but then if you really need to know maybe not.

I'm sure that there are circumstances where the service will justify the fee with regard to oddbals and variations ( I'm referring to the guns, not the collectors), but although I'm keen to know the period of manufacture that the serial number can usually tell me I'm not too interested in knowing the exact day that my mass produced gun came off the line.
Mel.
Just noticed, that last thread was my one thousandth. Do I get a coconut?
£25 seems fair.
Half a tank of petrol.
I keep seeing this thread and mistake it for some kind of Tinder App for BSA owners
But with photos of the guns you own and not the owners
Ha!
My wife just spotted BSA Dating in history.
She was relieved- or disappointed- when I explained.
Elderly but respectable BSA .177 Long Tom would like to meet a substantial Eastern European springer for some bell ringing fun.
