as you say problaby s means sporter but i could be proved wrong
I have not handled nor shot a 98 but looking at various reviews etc I see reference to HW98 and also HW98S. What is the difference, please? Or does the S simply indicate 'Sporter'. The reviews give no help.

First time I’ve seen it with an S on the end.

There is a 95 SM. Which is a 98 with open sights. The 98 is front heavy thanks the shroud. Some members use the 95 action in a 98 stock which is a good option. If interested in the 98 then have a look at the new special edition grey laminate. Mach 1.5

I've never been acquainted with a 98S.

Thank you all for your input. I have come to the conclusion that the '98S' does not exist as a distinct variant but is a 98 that person or persons have for some reason added an 'S' to.
Why? I don't know. Maybe the 'S' simply indicates 'Sporter' when people have added an 's' or 'S'.
Interestingly Sportsman Gun Centre refer to it as HW98 FT
