I tend to agree with you there Ed
The close quarters dispatch theory seems good to me but I'm beginning to think it's a repurposed firearms barrel. An idea of the actual bore size and twist might prove interesting. I can remember seeing something similar but can't for the life of me, remember where.
Whatever it is, it's fugly.

It looks to be a Weihrauch 35 barrel. Looking at the slot I think its where the barrel release catch was fitted. There would have been a spring there too. As to the muzzle I've never seen anything like it Regards Tim.
This has to be the most unlikely suggestion yet.

I asked on a mlitary forum in the firearms section, no ideas or help there ....... but one wit's answer was;
"Flag holder. For purposes of mounting Flag, White (Surrender). Just snag the material in there and it secures it quite well. Useful bit of kit in a tight situation."
French issue, is it?
