Do they become a HW45E when you fit a longer barrel and Walnut grips.![]()
Just fitted a shoulder stock to my 45.just need a longer barrel now![]()
I've fitted HW stocks to HW45's a couple of times and didn't like them much.
I prefer the HW45 as is, even it is liable to kick like a mule. I was thinking of fitting a TBT kit, but as I so seldom fire it I haven't bothered.
I thought that there was an issue with fitting silencers in that the barrel doesn't sit parallel in the top strap. The barrel is slightly higher at the muzzle end than it is at the breech.
I guess you can get away with a stumpy silencer, but if you look down the barrel and through the silencer you should be able to see that the front of the silencer is out of line with the bore of barrel (assuming a screwed in adaptor is used).
The extended barrel option gets around this problem - although I suspect it might look a little odd if the upward angle is noticeable.
.....Or did I dream that?
Bit of a thread resurrection here, but I have been working on a longer barrel for one of my 45's to allow the fitting of a moderator.
I wanted to keep the ability to swap back to the original barrel, so didn't want to modify the top slide, this meant that any extension had to fit through the 7mm steel ring that is cast into the alloy.
To do this I invested in an M7 tap and die to make the parts, dug out my last length of Anschutz 0.177 barrel offcuts, and a lump of stainless bar was mounted it in the chuck to make the M7 to 1/2 UNF adapter.
The tapered hole in the the slide muzzle was measured and and the adapter made to suit.
Next up was the barrel, I was looking to make it around 220mm long, up from the original 170mm. It will be cold-blued eventually.
Time to do a bit of trial fitting, and here is where it gets interesting.
The barrel extension is not concentric with the muzzle taper! As pointed out by Biker Bob, the barrel is at an angle relative to the slide. This made me wonder what will it be like with a moderator on...
Without the adapter fully screwed into the slide, it really shows the upward tilt of the barrel, if I screw the adapter fully into the tapered muzzle, it straightens everything out, but I know it is bending the end of the barrel down.
Looks better, but it will mean the POI is going to be very low, even over the eight feet in my shed, it is lowered by around one and a half inches.
I needed to know if it would be the same in my more recent HW45. Interestingly, although the upward tilt is still evident, the muzzle taper is coaxial with the barrel and is not bent down as my older model.
Off to the range on Sunday to try it out at 10m and find out if the moderator actually does anything other than look pretty.
Or have I been wasting my time on something that adds no value?

Too many guns, or not enough time?
very interesting on the muzzle tilt.. never noticed it before.. then again, never looked for it either ! I guess unless you are doing a project like this, most people wouldn't.
I wonder if it was deliberately introduced to address a low POI issue due to the reverse recoil ?
Always looking for any cheap, interesting, knackered "project" guns. Thanks, JB.
Mine sold a while ago, Found it easier to use another HW45 barrel holder off that auction site for a couple of quid Then i could just swap them round when i wanted it back as a pistol,
Just so easy to blow the end of your finger off when you have attached the stock without a longer barrel or silencer. Col.
