Can't remember exactly what model BSA they were (certainly pre-war), but a friend used to have a couple with Edwinson Green Cheltenham impressed stamps on the stock. I'm not sure, but I think they were originally filled in in red...

Also John M's BSA book has a nice section on stock stamps.
I have a BSA stamped
Pape
Newcastle
i.e omitting the WR
This is the earlier stamp .
I have a BSA Cadet with a circular stamp on the stock reading:
A. SANDERS
GUNMAKER
MAIDSTONE

I am not sure if this thread relates solely to UK air rifles but in my small collection of German air rifles I have a Jung Roland - .177 break barrel - with the retailers stamp pressed into the stock. "Karl Lamp, Husum" which is a town in W.Germany.
Also previously had a Webley Falcon with a makers stamp on the stock. Looked back at my pictures. That one was:
The Armoury
Mayfield
Sussex

Anglo Sure Shots . AKA Cox Brittania are marked with the retailers name (H. Ramsbottom , Manchester) on the barrel below the model name
I've got a Webley Senior with WR PAPE Newcastle stamp, quite a common dealer of the Webley classics I suppose!
