What did you avoid and perhaps regret?

Sitting in the traffic tonight, lights at red (for ages).

For some reason my mind went back to a time when a salesman in a gun shop tried to convince me to buy 0.25 BSA Mercury Challenger. Hard hitting, ideal for rats etc. etc. etc.

I was after a 0.22 (as most folk once were) and even though his claims might have been factually correct I left to catch the bus home with my 0.22 in a big cardboard box and the gun shops name proudly emblazoned on the label. No one bothered in the slightest.

XX years later (in tonights traffic) I wondered. Should I have bought that BSA. Would it be nice to own it now - for rarity value if nothing else?

So here I am thinking. Did you guys ever pass on the opportunity to pick up a nice pistol or rifle only to regret it at some point?

"C'est la vie.", as we say in the French speaking parts of Glasgow.

A few years back I told a friend (Keith)and fellow club member about a Theoben SLR88 that was for sale in Michael Tawns gun shop.Keith went to the gun shop and bought the rifle.
It was in show room condition and shot fantastic .
Keith never used to hang onto any guns for very long and offered it to me at a very good price.unfortunately I didn’t take him up on the deal.
I still regret not taking that gun home with me.
    Les..

I had the opportunity to buy either a rough BSA cadet rifle for £35 or a really nice Abas Major pistol for £65, I was working away and just missed a bit of plinking but if I bought the Abas then I couldn’t afford proper food for the week so I bought the Cadet. I should have bought the pistol and 5 or 6 Pot Knoodles! That was 20 years ago and I still haven’t managed to get my hands on an Abas Major

Wow a Abas Major for £65, 20 years ago, was still a very very cheap price. but l know just what you mean with not having enough money at the time. l also had the same problem many years ago.

I kick myself that I never bought a Pax Phoenix when they were available. Awesome concept and form factor for a hunting PCP. I just never had the right money at the right time.
Maybe in a parallel universe where i bought one I would now be cursing the lack of parts availability? This is why I'm considering letting the Skan go after all.
But that's the big regret for me.

Not buying an excellent left hand Theoben Olympus from BAR about ten years ago !

It appeared suddenly and I dithered and was sold the day after !

The Airmasters 77 Dominator BAR had in the rack for months a few years ago. Lost count how many times I picked it up and put it back. Mach 1.5

Comforting to know I'm not the only one with regrets. Same route home tonight and another one came to mind. Not in the same league as some: a little wooden stocked HW70. One came up in our club. It sat for ages. No takers. Eventually (after a couple of months) it found a new home. To this day I still fancy one. It's an itch I should have scratched years ago.

Was offered an early tilt barrel Whiscombe for a good price and turned it down. Now need a lottery win to get one.

BSA Mercury sport with the peepsight set up at the last Melbourne, i thought it was cheap and should have got it. I’ve tried in vain to find out who the seller was and if he managed to sell it.

If its any consolation I was very disappointed in the HW70 when I finally got one. It just wasn't very good in any way, had a nice thunk when you closed it but that was about it. Boring, not very accurate.
It may be the worst gun in their lineup.

Cheers for the heads up eyebull.

I guess that's a potential topic for another thread and a subject that's been touched on before. What gun did you want and get but ultimately it proved a disappointment.

Not an air rifle, but back in the 80's i had a friends shotguns in my cabinet while he was moving house, he told me i could use them when ever i wanted. One was a Winchester Grand European, chambered in improved & cylinder, its was i believe one of the last of the American made one's. I wasn't a bad shot back then, but with this in my hands i just could not miss, he offered it to me at a good price, but i'd just been granted my fac & wanted my first revolver & couldn't afford to buy both
