    HW95 / 98 MK1 Barrel superiority

Myth or Reality? Over the years in our sport I've heard rumours that the HW95 / 98 MK1 barrels were the best produced by HW?.Mr Pope even told me this but I never did ask, Why Steve? Over the years ive seen 80' wearing 95 barrels. Well this weekend I picked up a 1996 95 MK1 in .177. The rifling on mine is deep and more protruding than my 80's, 99's 30's etc. Question is why would HW just put better barrels on just these models and not the rest of the range? Mach 1.5

Very interesting, I have read that the 95 can be extremely good with the right fettle.

I'm totally unaware of any supposed / claimed superiority of those earlier models. But I do know that my very early one (1995?) Is very, very accurate.

It is not pellet fussy at all. But the very tightest groups I've shot with it were achieved with the H&N FTT. They are my go-to for it. The Baracuda FT was also superb as were some boxed 7.9 Crosman Premiers. I have some Baracuda 8s but have yet to test.

If you haven't done so already, DO try those FTTs.

The best barrel on a Weihrauch is a Feinwerkbau Sport.

Yes, I seem to remember back in the day (the "Sporting Air Rifle era") that some used the FWB barrel on HWs to try and achieve even better accuracy. Did some also try the Anschutz 335 barrel?

Back then, as now, I didn't have the equipment, skill or inclination to try such heady modifications, though, and, personally, I've never found a HW barrel wanting in the accuracy department.

    Barrel

WBPS fitted Annie barrels to HW77 / HW80. John Ford of sportsmatch used a FWB Sport barrel on his HW77. Mach 1.5

I can't believe that HW had a separate barrel making setup just for the 95. I would think all the barrels would be rifled in the same part of the factory. It is possible that certain batches would have deeper rifling than others but that would apply to all models they are used on at the time.

My 85 and very early 95 (with the cut away piston) are both very accurate. I think The steel on early weihrauchs is different. There is a stronger sulphur smell when you cut into them.

    The barrel on the early 98 is 410mm / 16 1/2"
This barrel was also fitted on the HW80k and HW85k, HW90k and the version of the HW95k with the fixed muzzle weight
These barrels, along with the other length available at the time, 500mm / 19 1/2" (full length) were all pre star nut breech fitting

It could be argued that QC was far better, during this time period and barrel quality, along with other components, were simply just better quality
It's my opinion that barrels of this age / type, were of very high quality, and also that the 16 1/2" K variant, is the best of the lot
I've shortened many of this type, of both barrel lengths, and even without the "choke" (which I don't want to get into), they remain highly accurate.
My current, 1991, uk short stroked HW90, had a 19 1/2 barrel, that I have shortened (and re crowned) to 16 1/2" and it's possibly more accurate than it was at full length.

More recently here, HW break barrel springers are now being fitted with the new length K barrel, which is 310mm threaded and takes a unf mod
This seems to be servicing the trend for carbine, moderated springers, while also having the bonus, of limiting muzzle energy to a point.
Funny that this barrel length, with a HW mod added, results in greater length than the original K barrel (16 1/2"), making them rather, un carbine.

I would agree that QC would be the key
Deeply cut rifling does not mean good accuracy

My HW95k is a 2018 model in .22, I bought it second hand but it had hardly been used. However I think someone had been in it as it had axle grease on the spring & the spring was undersized (short). It Only did about 9.5 ft/lbs.

It's now running a TBT maxi kit (short stroked) set at 10.6 ft/lbs and has a slimtech style metal silencer, it's comparably better than the standard ones they hire out at my local range, but doesn't seem especially accurate compared to my HW97k (.177 , Welsh Willy kit ) or .25 Sirocco, but I think it's better than the standard TX200 I had a go on the other week.

I’ve a .22 95 from 2017/18 with a vmach kit in and it shoots really well, but I have heard plenty of people say the early barrel weight 95 shoots better.
