I have bought an ox no.1 mainspring to try in my lightning CLX, what could possibly go wrong!!

I don't think these springs are anything like as stiff as their reputation suggests. The coils are very closely spaced which suggests a soft wind. Worth a play in my book!

I tried fitting one to one of my rifles last week & cut it to only a centimeter longer than the broken one I was replacing thinking it would be 11 something, it was 10, the broken spring had been 9.5 so I don't think that have any more poke in them than any other spring tbh.

That rifle is now running a TBT spring.

Agreed, which is what I was after, long and soft is better than short and stiff, in this case anyway!!

It was always the policy to stuff as much spring as you can.
Hence OX springs earned a reputation.
If we had used them correctly, they would be considered a good spring.

I had a second hand one that id removed from an old gun, it had a slight kink in it but it was very smooth to cock, shot with little twang despite loose guides and was lighter to cock than the OEM BSA spring but did give less power. It was this that tempted me to purchase. In contrast I have tried another spring in the CLX which I believe is a cut down Titan no.1. this has a higher cocking effort and gave a slightly harsh edge to the cycle and was at the limit for power.

The Ox had been the subject of much derision for many years, but it seems now that the Mickey-taking was unjustified and harsh performances were down to them not being matched to the recipient gun properly. T20 and other knowledgeable tuners have used them with success in recent times.

Yes,they have had a reputation for being far too stiff,I'm thinking the name ox has a lot to do with it.Glad the myth has been debunked by some experienced tuners.

I once bought a rough 95 in .177 and although it was well used it really shot well and was one of the only rifles I didn't dive straight in, after a while curiosity got the better of me and i found a buttoned piston and ox spring which made this shoot very nicely at over 11ftlb.

I think the much maligned BSA and much maligned ox will make a great partnership!
