    Vintage pellets

    Dear Friends,

a few days back I acquired a super nice BSA Meteor Mk 5. It is my fifth Meteor and the very best so far, I have developed an attraction to these iconic British springers. I've done my homework and at least pretend to know the ins and outs of the rifle itself, but this time I'm curious about the pellets I got with it. Most likely they were bought with the rifle back in the day, or at least during the same time period the rifle was available here in Finland.

So here are two plastic "tins" of pellets, astonishingly similar. Wonder if they came from the same product line? I got just one half full tin of "Champion Challenger" but three tins of "VIRI", one full, one half full and one with maybe 100 pellets left. I have shot a couple of dozen of the latter ones and even if they appear somewhat rough, they hit surprisingly well! At lest with my favorite kind of shooting, which is offhand at six meters with various old cheap rifles. So in my book they are by no means total crap.

I'd appreciate any info about these, memories of shooting them, feel of their quality, initial price etc. I'm about to save at least the full tin of VIRIs in my ever growing coll... OK, my miscellaneous pile of ancient airgun stuff.

Can't offer any specific info but could be possible the Tins were made by the same place but not the pellets as packaging is one of those things that tends to be made by one particular company and tthen sold for brands to use for their products (like Tetrapak etc).

The Viri pellets were made in the EEC which was created in 1957, the UK joined in 1972 and it was renamed in 2009.
    Not much help there.
    Meteor Mk5 was 1979 - 1994.
So if the pellets were bought with the Mk5 you would have to guess 1986 ish.

Excellent info behind that link, thanks.

The observation about similarity of the tins makes very much sense. Their design was new to me, lids are pretty difficult to open but they have slots on the rims of the lid and the bottom part, allowing one to trickle out a few pellets at the time.

Still any idea if the VIRIs are really French, or are they just rebranded? Did the French really call diabolos as "strangled bullets"

The Champion pellets look like 1990s products if they are supplied in a plastic dispenser rather than a tin (earlier Champion brand pellets were supplied in tins). They were made by L.J. Cammel, based in Merseyside, North West England and are a pellet manufacturer that I don't believe are still trading as I haven't seen their adverts for some time. They sold pellets all around the world but unfortunately the various brands I tried did not perform all that well.

No idea about the Viri as that is a new on on me. If the EEC changed their name in 2009, then they are no later than 2009 and may well originate from the same Cammel factory.
