Anschutz Model 250 Target Rifle Oil Damper System question. Which Oil?

I’m currently refurbishing my Anschutz Model 250 target rifle.
This is the rifle with an oil filled damper system to reduce recoil.
It didn’t look like it had ever been apart but as expected, all the internal seals were cheese and the oil filled damper had leaked everywhere.
I’ve sourced new seals, uk power spring etc from W.C.G. in Germany. They provided some hydraulic oil for the damper. However I’ve also read online that automatic transmission fluid is recommended.
Anyone here have experience of these and any knowledge on best oil to use in the damper system?
    Appreciate any advice
    Steve

Yes, The red Dexron auto transmission fluid is what's normally used, Coincidentally I have a 250 that needs resealing!!

I also used red transmission fluid for mine.
    Great rifles.

Thanks all. I’ve bought some ATF and currently waiting delivery of syringe. Hopefully will be back together and tested at BFTO by the end of the week.
It will be interesting to see what power it makes with a uk spec spring and if this adversely effects the recoil compensation.
My FWB 300 runs at about 9ftlbs with a “uk spec” spring from WCG and shoots very well. Steve

    Hi Steve,
I’d be worried the higher power would put undue pressure on the hydrolic damper system, it being designed to operate at 5.5-6ftlb.
Why not just refit the original spring with the new seals? I don’t see the point in trying to up the power and making it a non original spec rifle.

    Cheers,
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
I had same concern. I understood that this higher power spring only put it to circa 7ftlb.
Reassembled this afternoon with red ATF (quite a 3D jigsaw puzzle…) and it shoots really nicely at 7.1ftlbs. I’m happy with that. Will take it to BFTO tomorrow to have a proper go.
Lovely gun. Competition stickers from 90/91 on the stock. I’m guessing it’s been in a cupboard for most of the 34 years since.

    Sounds good.
I’ve an Anschutz 380 with all the old German competition stickers on it, I won’t take them off.
Hopefully we can cross paths at Bisley, would be interesting to compare that to my stock 250 and see if there’s a difference to the recoil.

    Cheers,
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
I’m v pleased with how it shoots. I’m having a problem with the diopter. The one it came with is FWB. It was loose in the case and it’s the first time I’ve fitted it. Or not … as it won’t tighten. I’ve fitted the one from my LG90 and its groups beautifully but about 2cm above the aim point even at lowest adjustment. I would appreciate a pic of yours. Great if we can meet at BFTO. I’ll dm you on both. Steve

I’ll get a pic of the sight over the weekend.
Those vintage anschutz sights are hard to find, I need a set for a Webley Osprey Supertarget.

    Matt,
I managed to get hold of the correct one. Danny’s excellent site has some contemporary literature showing the diopter.

And remarkably TheBay came up trumps.

Hopefully it will be on target with this one.
