Red Dot On a Pistol Advice

If I was buying one again, I'd be tempted to go for another 3 MOA vortex https://www.opticswarehouse.co.uk/vo...miRTYCNuvQdqRu But if I could get a 2 MOA at a reasonable price I'd go for that, but they are up another level, at least for Vortex.

I suppose it is like a quality aperture sight, you only need one and you only ever need to buy one unless it gets broken or lost. So £265 is a lot of money but maybe good value...

As it is taking more than 6 months to get a spare for the somewhat fragile rear sight on my Brno Aeron Model 5 single shot self-cocking match pistol in .22, and I have failed to come to terms with pistol scopes, I have bought a Hawke HK3204 red-dot system. It is on its way from an individual on the auction site.

I don't think I have ever used a red-dot sight, they are the kind of 'combat' thing that I am not interested in. Still needs must when the Devil drives.

Is there any particular trick to using one of these? It is described as a 1 x 25 so I presume one looks THROUGH the sight and not that both eyes open malarkey that was needed with the SinglePoint or BSA Reflex sight of my youth. Are these suitable for ten meter or twenty yard NSRA type targets or are they just for plinking?

They work great on pistols and can be a life saver if you can't use open sights any longer. You will cut your groups sizes in half. But be warned if you are a bit older there's a good chance you have astigmatism. Most older eyes do. A lot of people blame the sight when they look through it and that nice round red dot looks more like a chevron or uneven mess rather than a dot. I'm in that boat myself. My eye doctor had a special coating put on the lenses of my glasses that clears that up. It also helps when you drive at night. If you've ever noticed the headlights coming at you have these strange rays fragmenting out of them you better make an appointment to get fixed up. It worked wonders for me. The dots are now round again. You also might look at one of the red dot sights that have variable size dots that you can simply dial in to meet your needs.

I have a Walther Competition Red Dot on my 2240 mini-carbine (sounds expensive, but it wasn't, circa £40 about seven or eight years ago) and it's fine. Nice, small dot and adjustable brightness.

I'd love to have a go with a really good, top quality one. Neil's Budhnell looks lovely.

The old RWS red dots with small dot are great for pistols, I've bought a couple off here

Bushnell do a nice red dot though the prices have gone up

As others have said, you want a small size dot !

I cannot see iron sights any more, but I shoot pistol HFT with my Steyr with a Bushnell red dot.

the old RWS "electro-dot" red dots were like that - same layout as the trophy above - very handy to be able to take regular mounts..

Neil, failing memory is one of my problems

They seem to have moved away from the tube type that take standard scope ring mounts to Picatinny clamp type which will not fit . Maybe dovetail to weaver blocks will work ?

O.P’s link goes to a 4MOA red dot which seems rather wide, but at least it has adjustable brightness. Should be fine if mounted on something jumpy like an HW45 though😂.
