My only advice is dont.
Old airguns with some rust can clean up quite nicely with oil an 0000 grade steel wool.
Please help...
This old Vulcan metal finish has become worn, patchy, mottled with some light rust. It is not worth a professional refinish, nor bluing kits, I was thinking a rattle can jobbie. Obviously good preparation, etch primer a black top coat. I have used rattle cans on many items, but, yet to find one that is fairly robust and scratch resistant. Why is it that any drip of paint falls to the ground, rattle can or not, is difficult to remove when dry? They seem to like a dusty surface!
Any advice on which can to buy will be most appreciated, thanking you in advance.

Too many airguns!
totaly agree ive done lots over the years using this methord
you only get one life live it to the best of your ability
Many thanks for replies. I have used 0000 wire wool and oil many times in the past and have had good results on many. But, this old Vulcan is beyond saving with this beauty treatment. It is no oil painting, just a grab it now and again to do a bit of plinking. My other 38 air rifles are well cared for!!!
It is ugly and needs a bit of cheap make-up.
Thank you again….
This may sound sacrilegious but if all else has failed perhaps carbon fibre wrap ?
Self adhesive, carbon fibre wrap is Available quite cheaply on ‘the bay’ , in numerous different colours and finishes.

I would have thought that a cold blue job would be easier than a paint job and probably cheaper, dare I say a rust blue job,it's a nice finish and interesting to do and very cheap.
I have a little Merlin.
Factory painted from new.
Still in remarkably good condition even though its been used by children.
But I do prefer the look of bluing even if its cold blue.

My Vucan was a car boot sale find, it had been dumped in a damp shed for at leat 15 years, the stock looked like driftwood, and the metal was rusted to hell. The pitting was never going to come out, so in the end I just took off what I could and left it like that, it's now silver and black mottled with a stained green stock. It's a back door gun that is mainly used on rats and coke cans, so it doesn't go outside to get damp on the bare metal.
If you are set on painting it, give Halfords enamel spray paints a look at, I used to buy BMX bikes to custom paint and sell on, the enamel spray is available in a satin finish, which looks pretty nice.. OR!
How about BBQ paint? flat black, no glare, hard wearing..
There are a few pics on my Vulcan in this thread https://www.airgunbbs.com/showthread...=webley+vulcan
Thank you all for taking time to respond. I already have etch primer, etc…..
The satin black BBQ paint seems a goer for this old cheap hack, think I will give it a go! The painted Mecuries I have still look excellent for their age. I must admit the Mercury S models I have look fantastic blued.
Kind regards….
