Hahaha!

I bet that's lovely, Craig. Guessing it's another 77? That's the thing with some rifles. At first you think "this'll make the ideal wet weather gun" as it isn't so nice cosmetically. But then, once you've put some work and a little bit of yourself into it and then it goes and impresses with a fine performance, you feel it merits some cosmetic embellishment and then you might not want to get it wet.
On the ones of mine that fall under this category (and partly due to lack of enough time / experience in this area), I tend not to refinish them, just cleaning with oil and retaining the used look. But it still makes you reluctant to subject them to adverse conditions.
But then, if I think back 40 to 45 years ago, and you might have had just the one rifle back then. At some points, two or three. I had more time for shooting. Shot at the club and down the farm. Used the rifles lots more. And that rifle you had meant just as much to you then, but you seemed to accept getting it wet as part of the package.
The two of my rifles that I've owned the longest (my HW77 which became my Vantage and my main hunting rifle, Venom HW80) have both had a fair few soakings in the 80s and 90s and still look beautiful today.
