    Okay. I'm stumped.

    First post, part-moan, part-entreaty.

But how does one buy an air rifle these days? I live near Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city, and I can't find a shop I I can actually get in to.

    I have money and everything.

Even with the (questionable) licence regime in place, I did manage to buy some rifles a couple of years ago, but now?

Am I going to have to bite the bullet (haha), and go to England?

    Recommendations appreciated.

(Looking for a hardy PCP rifle in .177, ~£400ish.)

I assume you have tried googling?
Assuming you want to buy new: If you know the make or makes you are interested in, try dropping the distributor/manufacturers an email and ask them where the stockists are. Or their web pages may list stockists.

    Cheers, Phil

Move to England. The weather is tropical here and no air rifle licences!

Hmmm... North Carolina or England... Decisions decisions. ;-)

The licencing here in Scotland is a pain (I know what it was supposed to achieve, although I don't know if it did), but I didn't think it would gut air gun shops quite so effectively.

I've Googled, joined the two main sites - I notice free ads no longer carry air guns - that's where I got some before, 2nd hand.

It's a quandary. If I buy from a dealer/shop in England, I have to go there, or they need to send it to a dealer in Scotland - that adds ~£35 - just to pick it up from a fishing rod shop. I'm still not sure who's breaking the law if I buy second hand in England and 'import' them? I can't get a straight answer to that one.

Anyway. Second hand might be better. It won't be pristine for long (it's for young people to use, mostly). So far looked at Kral NP02's, Walther VM8's, saw a nice-looking (okay, it's subjective) Hatsan Factor... (Young folk think the tactical look is cool.) Stoegers and Gamos at that price look a bit boring.

(I think I'd prefer North Carolina.)

Why can't you get in to a shop? I don't know the current covid rules up there, but I'm sure if you want to there's a way.
You can buy in England no problem, once you have it it's up to you to do any paperwork reqd in Scotland.
    Google UK gun sale sites.

    Cross border trading

You could google gunshops in Scotland, assuming you hold an AWL, or enjoy a day trip south of the border, gun shops are amused by the stupid AWL, but happy to take your money, there are no border posts checking your purchases!
I always wanted to be a gun runner, and even though I have an AWL, I get a buzz sticking one to Nicola when I bring guns or booze over the non existent border!

It's about stock, and choice. I bought a Webley VMX from Wonderland some time ago. But their choice for PCP rifles is rubbish. (There's one, and it's the best part of £1000.)

Funnily enough, I did Google, but there are very few shops near to me. That's why I asked. #rollseyes. ;-)

    Many thanks for this.

I'll try Livelines in Armadale, that's not too far away from me.

My local shop is way over priced. I understand the transportation costs are more to get goods here but his prices are way above that .

A beat up HW99S for £200 secondhand. It looked like it had been run over and driven over by a tank. It may still be there after 4 years , although I was once told if it does not sell he sells them in bulk to a seller in England but I'm not sure if that's true.

I buy my .22lr bullets from Livelines. I can save around £15 per 500. So I buy them when I visit my brother in Bathgate.

If your on facebook ,check out livelines on there .

Can confirm Livelines is a great wee shop. Proper old school air gun and associated equipment emporium. Lots of rifles on the wall, some pistols in the cabinet, a wide choice of pellets, scopes and other gadgetry.

Unfortunately, this meant I somewhat blew my budget. They had an NP02 which I thought might be a good intro. But, they showed me a Walther Reign and well, how could I not.

Very pleased, and I dare say I'll be back again in a couple of months.
