First black powder certificate inspection

I’ve just sent an email to my local licensing dept about the securing of the box by chain and it’s location.

Don't over think it. When they turn up, as long as you have the correct box, they will advise you of the best place to store it in their opinion. It makes them feel important if nothing else!

I agree with the above. I bought an approved wooden box to store Hodgdon 777 BP substitute which I located in an unsecure cupboard and came with some self adhesive hazard labels not appropriate for 777. My FEO didn't have a problem with the box being temporally unlabeled until I could source the correctly annotated ones and there was no problem with the location or a securing chain being needed for the box.

Another example of the local FEO making up laws as he goes along. There is actually no requirement to annotate the box at all. I send UN0027 (BP) labels with my boxes as some people like them and the fire service like to know what they are handling, but some forces reckon it just advertises what's in the box. I only applied for an Explosive Certificate as my FAC was due for renewal and Hodgdon 777 substitute had just been reclassified as an explosive. The process was straight forward, and the certificate was returned with my renewed FAC. The only problem now is that many dealers are not bothering to stock 777 anymore due to the predicted low demand following its reclassification.

The process was straight forward, and the certificate was returned with my renewed FAC. I suspect that dealers not stocking it is not due to low demand.
Kranks cannot store blackpowder on the premises anymore so it has to be ordered in advance of a visit to the shop. I expect all other dealers are affected the same way.

Fortunately, I also have an Anvil nitro conversion Remington 1858 revolver which means I should always have something to shoot if BP and BP substitutes become even harder to source.

Well done. They are 'usually' very helpful. Now you have your magic ticket just use proper black powder and forget that horrible plastic stuff. It's much nicer!

^ This. I have tried Pyrodex and 777 and found them to be not very nice to use so it's BP only for me. Of course this means that I cannot shoot my muzzle loaders on indoor ranges - so be it.

I'm glad it went smoothly.
When you renew your FAC make sure you do the application for the Explosive License as well. It does not come with the FAC automatically even if you have muzzleloaders.

Glad your inspection went well and you will be receiving your explosive certificate soon. FAC renewals times vary from force to force but you should receive a reminder 12-16 weeks before the certificate expires. I would respond immediately as most applications are taking at least 12 weeks with some longer delays due to the necessity of getting your GP to provide the required medical letter in a timely manner. My explosive certificate application was made at the same time as my FAC came up for renewal, so future renewals will be at the same time. As there will be at least a 4 month gap between your certificates, you will probably need to apply for them separately.
I'm not a purist and having tried BP substitutes as well as traditional BP, I eventually settled on 777 for a number of reasons, but much prefer 777 to Pyrodex which is why I needed to apply for an explosive certificate in the first place.

Some GPs refuse to provide medical letters and those that do can charge whatever fee they like. If the worst comes to the worst, you could consider the site linked below who can provide this service at a comparable price to many GPs. I haven't had cause to use them myself but know of some who have due to their GP practice refusing to provide the necessary letter.
