Hawke Sidewinder 8-32x56 vs MTC Viper 8-32x60

    Hi all,

How would you compare Hawke Sidewinder 8-32x56 vs MTC Viper 8-32x60? Seems like they are in direct competition to each other - similar size and price range. I have a Viper 8-32x60 but never had a chance to look at the Hawke Sidewinder 8-32x56. Also, is the Hawke springer rated?

It's a shame no-one has yet advised on this, as I too am looking at one of these, or may opt for the 6-24x56 SR12 IR; quite new to scopes.

i use the previous model sidewinder 8-32 for ft brought 2nd hand for the money brillant

another club member uses the mtc but either cant or hasn't worked out how to dial which i do with the hawke
he has to hold over or under depending on range
one pro on the mtc is the large sidewheel than the hawke

hawke scopes are imop under rated
so out of the two if i was buying new id go for the hawke mildot

    all hawkes are spring rated

How do you get on with the 8-32x56 for FT? The new model now comes with a large wheel allowing the user to decide to fit it or not. Personally, and again I'm new, prefer the side focus / parallax adjustments.

I think one important thing to note having read through various threads is SR's; the SR6 for .177 and the SR12 for .22. I had initially looked at the Eclipse 30 IR 6-24x50, but prefer the specialist reticles now available.

The Hawke software is extremely useful whene reviewing the scopes, prbably more so than the standard mildots, certainly when I have printed out the scope cap insert!

Time to put it into practice?

I have the original Deben Sidewinder 8-32x56 on my .308 so its certainly springer safe

I find the eye relief on 32x is a bit close for comfort, but I'm sure it'll be ok on an air rifle. I tend to use it on about 22x.

I've not looked through the MTC, but the optics in the sidewinder are first class.

if you prefer side focus go for it i shoot with blokes who use side and front paralax

not sure how the sr ret will work for ft as we al dial in so the cross hair is always the point of aim

i used chairgun over the hawke one as it was recommend by many fellow shooters
but for hawke map range the progam is brillant

Time to put it into practice?
    hope this is of help

    Sidewinder

I use the 8-34 older Hawke Sidewinder with a Terry Hart custom side wheel for FT and find this to be very good. It range finds and dials in well. I brought it second hand and in my opinon is excelent value.
I would like to try one of the new ones out so if any body from Hawke is out there and would like to supply me with one for evaluation i would be happy to report my findings.
I do have an MTC Viper 10x44 which i find to be fantastic but i dont think i would not get on with the 8-32 if i had to dial in with it, but i'm sure some people do use the dialing in method.

    hawke vs viper

i started off with the hawke sidewinder and moved on to the 8-32x60 viper
and found the viper far superior the glass is clearer and the dials are easier to
use as clicks are more prominant and turrets handle well, found the hawke dials very light and quiet so over dialing can be a problem rangeing was also eratic on the hawke out to 55 yds only problems ive found with the viper are the side wheels one is too large the range marks are too close and its clumsy to use the small one is too small so i got uk niel to make a 4" side wheel which ive found suits me and the pro target a lot better. i should also point out that i was using the hawke when i had just started out in ft so some problems might have been my inexperience haveing said that i do like the viper
and if i upgrade i will go for the new one from mtc the tiapan as this too offers value for money and mtc give a lot better service and advice.
some may disagree all i can do is pass on my own oppinion.
    regards phil

One thing to remember is that the Sidewinder has been completely re-released with new glass.etc and is completely different to the original one.

Yes, I'm interested to know about the new Sidewinder. The Viper should be better than the old one based on many people's feedback.

Anyone managed to compare those two scopes so far? Especially the rangefinding at 32 mag against a dark spot.

Opticaly I could not see any real differnce between the new sidewinder and the viper. You have the choice of SR6/12 depending on mag or mildot on the sidewinder, the viper has the SCB reticule, the MTC has 1/8moa adjustments the hawke has 1/4moa. Build quality is comparable as well. I don't think anyone would be dissapointed with either scope. You really need to look though one and decide which features you want. Of course there is also the new Nikko target which seems to also fit just into this group, with very simillar specs and prices, and although I haven't seen one yet would think it won't disapoint.
