The most sensible comment on this thread!

Apart from the corrosion, people who polish down to the metal obviously don't have anything else to do with their time.

I stripped and polished my Crosman SA 6 cowboy pistol.
It looks much better than flaking black paint.
It wont rust as it appears to be made out of crap.
So you can polish a turd

    The gun is great.
The metal is crap. Although having checked it is probably aluminium.
Fultons at Bisley had some Browning leather basket weave holsters.
    Really good Quality.
"£10 each sir as there is no call for them - dont know what they fit."
    I bought two.
One fits the SA6 and adds at least £30 to the value.
The other had 357 on the back and fits my Crosman 38T.

Where do you get this done and how much for a pistol like the HW45?

That made me laugh out loud and spit tea all over my keyboard.
but then if you have an old ratcatcher for example with really bad blueing as they all are anyway and dont want to spend a load of dosh on a reblue, polishing to a very high finish will only require as much attention as a blued gun. mine has never rusted and i just wipe it over when iv finished shooting it with an oily rag ..job done.and its been like that for well over a year now.

How to screw a gun, Finish.

    Degrease,

    Soak in hydrochloric acid,

Drop into perforated plaggy bag full of drain cleaner,

    Dump in English Channel,

    Job done.

Fire five times at close range,

Bolt it to your mates rear BMW spoiler,

Chrome is porous, that's why decorative chrome plate has copper and nickel layers before the chrome

Only metal worth plating is c**p metal. No blade I ever made has rusted, as yet.

As for polishing guns its preference of the owner and imo an easyer and more forgiving finnish.

I have spent far too much of the evning looking to see how much it costs to nickel plate a pistol. If anyone can put me out of my misery I would be most appreciative. To get it done professionally are we talking £50, £100, £200?
