Exit pupil, 8x50 or 8x56 works much better.
Why is that no one makes an 8X40 or even 8X32 scope? Much more useful than either 6 or 10 X whatever for general shooting with either air rifle or powder burner up to 200 yards.

I do have a Hawke Eclipse 8X56 which actually projects a brilliant sight picture but I was more thinking about something more suited to HFT lets say. A decent 8X40 should satisfy all the requirements I think. I find 10X a little too much and the less exotic of the 3X9 s really are not optically all that good when the lighting conditions become a bit tricky.

Whats wrong with a 3-940 and leave it on x9.
In truth a 6x40 or 6x42 is the optimum compromise. 7x50 does it, with the Meopta having that reputation for being a good one. Then there is the 8x56 by S&B. Anything more is optically more challenging to make. Divide to 7 is the rule of thumb as its an exit pupil size ting.
I do like a fixed scope, but the market demands more toys.
Tasco do a 8x50 with a 50y parallax I think.
They do and a right pile of poo it is as well . I bought one to experiment with, optics not very good and it was all over the place. Easy enough to alter the parallax as I thought that was the problem but no matter what I did it wouldn't keep a zero. Good job it was cheap, and it certainly showed why.
The problem with 50 and 56 mm objectives is the very shallow depth of field they produce. The 32 mm objective stays pretty much ' in focus ' from 10 yards on at 8X but the problem is that it becomes very difficult to range using target blur. You are correct that 7 is the magic number but given a 40mm objective with 96% transmission and a 50mm one with the usual 80~85% ( true values not what the maker claims ) the 40 mm will appear sharper and just as bright so the quality of the coatings and the glass become paramount. A good 3x9 should do it but one is then looking at exotic glass and exotic prices. Having said that I have a meager Hawke Panorama EV 3X9X40 which has a brilliant sight picture but to my eye something is not right with the lens system. Perhaps it is just me.
I do have a Vortex Diamondback HP 4X16X42 which does the trick but was just wondering if there was a 8X40 available anywhere without spending the best part of £500.00 .

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.....
7mm is the average pupil diameter, generally any more light is wasted and any less dulls the image. Depending on the quality of the optics the quicker or slower you notice the deterioration
