The Cox Britannia would be my choice, as the principle of working parts behind the breech results in a very compact true carbine. In fact, these Edwardian rifles were 'Bullpups' before the name had entered common usage.

I once handled a modified Britannia that was fitted with a neat little forend, so maybe something along those lines with perhaps a more conventional stock that fits over the working parts?
