    Rapid peril

At weekend my q\f unit exploded in my hand destroying my stock.
I was shot with the bolt head and stock inlet finisher.
New Mk1 in a MFRstock.....only bought it a month back.
My hand is still numb a bit.
Just screwing a new bottle on.
At the point where the pressure nips up i got a .....that doesnt feel right, bang eyes shut and throb all at once..really quick.
The unit was constructed too weakly by being threaded too far internally.
It blew the head off and left the threads in the hole
Apparently only 6 of these were made....and others sheared off on assembly.
Note to self...no MK1 anything ever again.
The only difference was a 230 fill. as opposed to the normal 200.
It had been on the gun 2 years.
So if your Q\f is the early flat topped unit ...get it out.

    T

Sent a new one out ......now i need another stock ..... it really makes you jump.

thats why threading needs to be done spot on were high pressure air is involved.you were very lucky .just looking at the pic it looks more to do with hole in the centre(far to large) and not leaving anough meat on the wall

    Reply From BEST Fittings

From Richard Bingham, MD BEST Fittings.

Please may I start by saying that we are extremely sorry that someone has suffered loss due to the apparent failure of one of our products.

We always try and resolve any issues as swiftly as possible, and strive to see our customers completetly satisfied.

During my telephone conversation with MrGreengrass on Tuesday 29 Nov, I did ask what action he would like us to take. The subject of a replacement stock was briefly discussed, but as it was a second hand unit and no price was forthcoming we were unable to come to a conclusion. As no pictures were available at the time for us to view, we asked that the stock be forwarded to us so that we could inspect it. We were informed that it was no longer available, but that pictures would be sent.

To date we have not received any pictures, neither have we received any follow up calls requesting any further action, so have been unable to offer any.

The pictures posted on this thread are the first that we have seen, so please do not jump to the conclusion that we are indifferent to the situation.

As for the valve in question:

    Please see http://d.pr/vAK0 for reference.

Responding to requests from customers, BEST Fittings produced a small quantity of 1/4"BSP valves towards the end of 2009.

They were hydraulically tested to 400BAR at design stage without any failures.

However, on installation into a gun, it was possible to create a crack in the fitting beneath the head if overtightened. This was discovered when a customer sheared the head clean off when installing one. He admitted that he had been a little heavy handed, but it was in fact for the good as we were alerted to a potential problem.

On further testing, the design was revised and a different fitting used as a valve carrier.

All of the early type valves that were traceable were recalled and replaced as far as we were able to tell.

Please have another look at the picture if concerned about one that you may have purchased from us. If you return it to us, we will happily replace it free of charge for one of the revised design.

If there is anything more that we could have done, we would have done it.

Trusting that we can continue to serve you.. and if MrGreengrass would like to get back in touch with us to discuss the matter further, we would be only too pleased to resolve it.

scary but for the stock taking most of the impact it could of been a lot worse, high pressure is a dangerous thing.

I notice looking at both the best fittings pictures & the failed item that the one which failed did so in a different place, (top of the thread) sugesting that overtightening was to blame.

I must therefore ask do these items come with a recomended tightening torque figure?? if not then who knows how many others could have been stressed to a dangerous level !

phrase's like "finger tight" or "nip up" invite disaster from the heavy handed.
