    Walnut oil

And thats just what it should be used for SALADS, NOT WOOD. Use one of the proper gunstock finishes.

Salad oil can be used but it will take along time to dry.
The gunstock preparations have drying oils in them to aid the process.
I found walnut oil not as good as finishing oil.

Pure Walnut oil from the supermarket is a drying oil (it polymerises) but it can take a while.
Walnut oil preparations, specifically for gun stocks have chemicals, often heavy metal compounds in them to speed up the process.
There has been a trend in recent years to use more natural (safer) products in some oils but I don’t know if it’s reached the gun stock finishing trade yet?

I used Walnut oil from the supermarket on a salad spoon and it did take several weeks to dry properly.
Other natural drying oils available in the supermarket are Flax seed (linseed) and Hemp oil.

English walnut oil preparation or if you want a nice deep shiny look Coloron Walnut oil (various shades). If you use Coloron apply sparingly and allow to dry well before handling.

Birchwood Casey Tru Oil is recommended by many. Not tried it myself but there are a few DIY recipes on the net for those on a tight budget.

Well said! The traditional oil used for 150 years to provide an oil finish on walnut stocks has always been Linseed. If it aint broken why try to fix it with one of the various other oil concoctions on the market? The is always an argument over whether Raw or Boiled should be used, my preference is Raw as thats what it is with no driers to make it go gummy.

This is a high gloss varnish, very different finish to traditional oiling. Good product if that's what you want. Anyway the op has been informed of the best product for what he wants.
