I have a 177 krait here that is crazy accurate with AA express. Produces hole not much larger than the calibre itself at 37yds (furthest I can go at my wind free barn, rested - obviously)
I the past with another accurate 177 (rapid) these were also very tight groups but I head the head shot runners I've mentioned on a previous post (some years ago, I think) - one was a rabbit with was between eye and ear with obvious pass through and brain matter emerging from the exit wound. Maybe the pellet was deflected due to lighter weight.
I'm gonna give 177 a chance to redeem itself next time out. It'll be a krait with the pard 008 mounted. Shots will be max distance or 30yds (dictated by perm) against rats. I have no desire to re-live the rabbit experience with any live quarry.
Recently I've been running the pard on my uragan compact in 22 with a massive success rate.

If you have a .177 that shoots the Zan 10gn accurately...
and I have X3 that do..they take the wind better and retain more energy than
any conventional pellet.

Just ordered some to test The Mako's were pretty good, but not accurate enough in my guns.

I found the same with jsb knockout 10s. Inch group at 30yrd but the rifle can do waaaay better with other pellets.

Hey fella, no body wants a runner or a flapper, its horrible to watch.
I know everybody sort of says on a rabbit, aim behind the eye and below the ears.
A rabbits brain is located more towards the front of the skull and behind the eyes.
If you go too far back then its just rear skull and connective tissue, same with just below the ears.
Depending upon the angle bugs is sat at I use the eye as an aim point. Pellet goes in through the eye socket, through the centre of the brain, and out through the other eye.
Very effective. I use very similar technique with all quarry be fur or feather.

Exactly, to me that cross hair is too high and back.
I know its been aim point for eons but the eye gives a definite aim point and not a guess.
Suppose its like the calibre debate, if you aim there and use .30 and it works you are going to keep doing it.
My findings are that they go straight down, with no or minimal kicking when I use the eye socket.
I used to use the "behind the eye" shot all the time with .177 and .22. When one goes down without a jump, or kicking and you tell yourself "good shot that" and upon retrieval its been an eye ball shot. You naturally make that the go to shot. Then you find it works with all quarry. Well I did any way.

Yeah, this has always been my method draw the line between centre of eye to Base of ear, find midpoint and that's the brain centre, or so I was caused to belive. So the brain is actually directly behind the eye?

seems like "rear edge of eye" is the optimal aim point...

Brain is kind of diamond shape, where the large centre portion is behind the eyes or as suggested to the rear of the eyeball.
Same theory for squirrel.
Rats eyes are forward on the skull and brain is slightly further back if perfect side on which is a rare shot.

Weather permitting, a session on the rats tonight armed with my krait, 008, better understanding of the biological makeup of my quarry and a renewed enthusiasm for 177....

26 rats shooting from a fixed position, two places where rats emerged to feed/socialise. One at 26yds and one at 19 yds.
Two "runners" which expired very quickly but something dawned on me - the express are a very flimsy skirted pellet and I saw a few damaged ones which I chucked away. I'd never given this much though but perhaps I'd missed damaged pellets in the past and these had contributed to "minor" misses? With a larger calibre this wouldn't have mattered too much but this perhaps is where the 177 gets exposed a little?

Who knows but I've had a good session tonight and there's very little to choose between the sub 12 calls really. I'd say the larger calibre is more forgiving Providing the shooter knows their rifle and trajectory.
