The side hook fasteners, is that how the lid was secured and not the clasp type?

Can you please let me know the internal depth please Pete.

Well I’m not sure, if you remember I bought an L Pattern on my third visit to Kempton which I bought for bell target shooting and I just thought that I may try and have a go at making a box for it. I have some pieces of oak that are 13 “ x48” x 3/8” thick and was thinking of trying to use those but I’m not sure if they would look right as the original boxes are of pine.
As my gun is late twenties early thirties model I suppose It should be ok as I assume the original boxes were for the pre WW1 guns.
My experience of todays kiln dried redwood tells me that I could waste my time using that as it readily splits, especially the Scandinavian white wood which tends to be sold as pine.
    It’s just an idea though

    Cheers Melv

I do like a nicely trimmed box.

Is that the original green baize interior or is it a replacement, Peter ?

I’ve seen that one, Mel. The box fades into insignificance when compared with the gun and its provenance. It’d be the pride of any collection.

    Tell me more Mick,

I love a BSA story with some provenance. It brings the old girls to life or at least gives an insight into their previous life.
Currently looking for Baikal Makarov pistols with the following prefixes to the serial number: 98, T01,
Prefer boxed or cased but will consider loose examples too.

Sorry, John, but I’ve forgotten the details but the overall impression stayed with me.. It had been at Melbourne before and the stallholder was in the same room as the tea bar, the first stall on the left as you entered. Hopefully he’ll recognise himself from this description.

    Yes, that’s one Mick.
Should have known about the oak, one of the first things you are taught as an apprentice, when fitting oak doors, use brass screws and fittings etc.

I have a container full of old pitch pine 9 X 3 joists if you need some to rip down, Melv ?

I was going to build a conservatory but couldn't be arsed.

That’s very generous of you Mick, I will give it some thought, I haven’t got the facility to rip 9”, I suppose I could rip opposing edges then cut down the middle with my old hand ripsaw.
I have access to a planer thicknesser though.
    Thanks again for the offer.

I'll measure the wood again when I've finished babysitting, and measure my saw bench blade height --- I may be able to plank it.

That would be good but don't trouble yourself, the length would need to be at least 43", don't know when I would be able to collect it though.

    But thanks gain
